Scope ring lapping thread???

On all my varment rifles anymore I buy 30.00 Vortex hunter rings and bed them save myself 100.00- 125.00 to spend elsewhere never has failed me yet and I doudt it will, in my opinion after bedding there as good as any ring on the market.
Its very little work for alot of savings
Sometimes ya just gotta think outside the box a little.
Look at it this way, you have 4 rifles by doing that you save yourself the price of a barrel to build another rifle, or spend on components, buying another scope etc.

I would be much more concerned with the possibility of deforming the scope tube than the rings. Whatta Hobby!
And the madness continues. In 50 years of competitive shooting I have never heard another shooter say my rings deformed my scope tube because the rings are bad. This does not include the guy with big forearms and a breaker barrel tightening the screws. But then again I don't sell lapping bars and belive in common sense. Yes I bought these rings properly sized but I going to make them just a wee bit bigger.

On actions with removable bases, the bases should be bedded for maximum contact and to equalize the base heights. Then you can mount the rings and check contact.

I'm going to be bedding some bases today, in fact.

Good shootin' :) -Al
I try to stress-free bed my one piece base. I apply Kiwi release agent on screws and action, rough up the underside of the base, apply MarineTex, lightly tighten screws to get the bubbles out then loosen the screws a couple of turns to make sure the base isn't flexing.

I used to bed scope bases using release agent.

The last one I did using a can of EBay release agent did not release....not to worry, it's now permanently glued.

I plan to do all as glue and screw in the future, correcting base/receiver heights in the process.

I believe that breaker bar tighten of the ring screws is the biggest issue with deforming a scope tube. And then once the scope is removed there is the huge ugly gouges in the paint and dents to go with it.

Two things, first the only real way to see how the rings are contacting your scope is to mount the rings and lap them a bit, and examine where the lap is and is not cutting. Secondly, I get a bit tired of folks that apparently never lapped or bedded a ring posing on threads on lapping rings, unless it is to extol the virtues of the Burris rings with inserts, or asking how to do something. Finally two actual tips. bedding bases is not difficult and it is a really good idea. Lastly, if you have mounted and lapped a pair of rings, and you need to swap scopes leave those rings where they were lapped and just swap scopes, unless you are going to relap them in their new location. Don't leave them tight on the scope, tighten them to a different base and hope. Remove the scope, move the rings, relap and then mount the scope. When I lap I always slightly round all of the corners and edges that will contact the scope. i guess that that was more than two tips. Oh well....
