Horrible news from Australia

PM came out with plans for a national gun ban already. Body's are still warm. Kinda feels like this plan was in the back pocket.

The father and son were on a terrorist watch list but they didn't revoke their gun licenses or seize their firearms.

Every time you want a firearm your needs to submit a "permit to acquire" as part of that process they do a background check and review your intended purpose of use. Hunting, target shooting, primary production etc. So there is a system that links your conduct to firearm ownership. How you can continue to own a firearm while on a terrorist watch list seems like a deliberate failure.

In reality Aus gun laws aren't that bad.

A molotov cocktail provides a more violent and widespread assault, so is a ban on gasoline next? Rob Rhiner and his wife were just stabbed to death, time to ban knives? Yet everyday we see a report where a violent criminal who was released many, many times was finally arrested for murder. It's always the perps who are at fault, yet the enablers fail to recognize the true cause.

Governments may ban many things, but they cannot legislate away hatred, just like they cannot pass laws that create altruism where there was none before. Where hatred exists, the tools will be found by some to act on that hatred, no matter what any government "bans" or "restricts". Until such time as governments choose to identify and deal with the causes of this hatred, such acts will not only continue, they will likely become even more frequent. Everyone had better be prepared to deal with them, even if they think it unlikely such things could ever happen to them. It only takes once.

Thank God for christians. Most beleve the verse that says "i will curse them who curse you and bless them that bless you" Im not saying that I approve of Israels actions but God has always taken care of that.

Yes, those peace loving Christians who have never committed an atrocity....

 :(

I’d bet the farm that they go in the opposite direction and double down on stricter gun control. If that’s indeed possible.
THAT is exactly what is coming down…
The rush to enact stricter gun laws is being shouted by all and sundry politicians and talk of adapting West Australian legislation restricting the number of firearms you can legally possess… {added} also lowering magazine capacity from 10rds to 5rds.
Much is being made of “He Legally owned six guns…!”
Times are getting tougher here for legitimate shooters…

Why are they beating around the bush and go ahead and accomplish the primary goal. Ban private ownership of firearms in all of Australia coupled with mandatory surrender and confiscation if necessary. Private ownership of a firearm would be illegal and subject to prosecution.
Having said all that, I am unaware of any statute/ charter/ constitution that protects or provides any right to keep and bear arms for Australian citizens.

IF ONLY…
There is NO guarantee to the any right to possess a firearm and such ownership is entirely up to state and federal jurisdiction…
There is already a “National Firearms Act” that came into place following the Port Arthur mass casualty shooting that led to the banning of semi-auto long firearms.
Pistols are on the very margins of legality and ownership highly regulated {more than even rifles} and even more so for any cartridge larger than .358 calibre {think 9mm}
“A review of current legislation is in order as clearly there is need to amend and further control who can possess a firearm and what types of firearms”…
