45acp or 9mm

Something I heard/ Wives tale maybe? True,? WWII stuff
---the 45 ACP was arrived at for the military because it was one round you could shoot the enemies
horse and bring it down
---
So following along that logic, if it will bring down a horse........

Howdy !

The Colt 1860 Army revolver replica I had, shot .452” diam patched round ball.
That starting, un-fired ball diam is the same as the .45ACP calibre.

Add to that, the Civil War-era revolver’s attainable Mv, and they ostensibly had a .45ACP
“ power factor “ equivalent handgun; back in the 1860s

The 1860 was sometimes referred to as a “ horse pistol “. This name was associated with large pistols often attached to the pommel of the saddle, and deployed by cavalry.
The useage started out with single-shot handguns, and at length…extended on to the adoption of revolvers. Some Colt’s “dragoons” saw use as “ horse pistols “, starting w/ the Model 1848; which was issued to U.S. Cavalry. In that sense…. “ horse “ refered to where the weapon was deployed from.

John Wayne’s “ Rooster Cogburn “ character refers to character Mattie Ross’s gun as being a “ Colt’s Dragoon “ in the movie.

1911 45 ACP.

My custom built carry gun A stainless steel Para- Ordinence Light Double Action 45 ACP. That I built for my use. It is an officer's model size that actually fits in a front pants pocket. Signs are Novak, mag well is Smith and Alexander, tuned ejector and extractor, Grips are Vietnam Buffalo bone, with engraved screws, match barrel and bushing, jeweled hood, reverse cup, two piece rod, trigger is 2 pounds. Five 8 round mags, each mag is fitted to and numbered to the gun. I setup the gun to feed mags full of empty fired brass. Why, because I shoot a 252 grain revolver style SWC bullet with a big flat meplat.

What I shoot, stays shot.

So in 2025 is it possible to find a higher capacity 9mm style 1911 with the same trigger system of a 1911.? Is that what the 2011 pistol is all about? Im trying to catch up.
Would you buy such a gun or stick with 45acp.
Even if your a reloader is there much difference in price between making 9mm or 45acp ammo once brass is purchased.
Several options in double stack 9/2011. From $500-$10,000. And they are fantastic.

If you reload, I have no clue, if you are buying factory ammo, 9 is probably <1/2 the cost. Depends on what you want and how much you shoot, budget etc.

Don’t forget to look at the CZ shadow2 variants and the Dan Wesson DWX.

YouTube is where you need to be.

over here in the uk before the 97 pistol ban i had about 9 colt 45,s i even had a original 22/lr colt ace i loved it if we brits could still shoot pistols i would choose a 45.acp bs

That originated with the Colt Walker or Dragoon.
44 caliber ball over a standard musket load of powder. Typically about 60 grains.
Will supposedly put a lead ball into a Chevy 350 engine block.

And the thing with the 45ACP would probably have started in WWI.

Has anyone seen this ammo? Its kind of related to the topic i.
I guess its something the 9mm can do but the 45acp cant , because i dont believe its offered in that caliber so there is that..hahaha..i know lots of 9mm love out there just not much from me. This has to be some of the most impressive ammo ive ever seen. In a 9mm size cartridge.
I kind of feel a need for that..because i dont have it..no other reason hahahaha just so i can say check this out ...pew pew pew

I came close to getting a .357Sig for that kind of reason. I always liked the .357mag and it had the same MV with the 125gn HP's. Several of the state patrols out here went to that for a while when they went to semi-autos. Then the 9mm offerings improved enough to get accepted.

Colt Walker/Dragoon was the .44mag of the day. I overloaded a Remington .44 one time, filling the cylinder with powder and a lead ball. Got over 1300 fps.

I have 9mm pistols and see why they are so popular but when I fired the HK 45c I knew after the first magazine that this is the one. You need to find out what works for you and which one you shoot the best. If you can shoot straight, anything will work.

Howdy !

That 6.5mm wildcat looks basically, like a mini version of the “ .357AutoMag “.

I shoot them all. Recently, I read a report that had been compiled over decades of actual gunshot incidents. The report's findings were remarkable in that two hits from a small caliber were more incapacitating than one hit with a large caliber.

Recovery time for follow-up shots is of critical importance in self-defense.

Feds found out that a 357 loaded with 125g HP at 1250 incapacitated very quickly, and this load is a duplicate of a 9mm+P.

My cousin is an operating room nurse, formerly a medic who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. This man has seen a lot of gunshot wounds. He carries a 40 S&W loaded with 155g Winchester Silver tips, and has pictures of the dead guy's wounds to prove its effectiveness. The velocity of the Silver tip is 1150 in my Springfield XDM, and is extremely accurate.

I read that years back about 00 buck

As noted, a .45 ACP can be extremely accurate. Consider this target shot at 50 YARDS one-handed by a USAMU pistolero:

As noted, I prefer shooting paper targets with the .45 ACP because it makes nice big holes that are easy to see. You may want to use "splatter" targets to see bullet holes better, especially indoors.

I once interviewed a policeman from Miami who got in a shootout with a robber, he shot the bad guy I think 9 times with 9x19mm before it stopped him. To follow up (I was writing a magazine story on it), I talked to the Dade County coroner about the incident. I asked whether some larger caliber might have ended it differently. He said it was all in where the bullets hit. He said that for handguns, the only sure way to stop a bad guy instantly was to either: a) cause so much blood loss and trauma (by hitting the heart, or a large organ or major blood vessel) that the blood pressure to the brain drops instantly, or b) to strike the bad guy in the CNS, meaning the brain or spinal cord, which basically shuts him down like a TKO. Otherwise, he said that because you don't really have nerves that feel "pain" inside your body, you can get shot in the thorax, and it doesn't really "hurt" ... he said it feels more like a punch. So you keep on fighting...I think the cop's 9th shot got the bad guy in the neck or head, and that was all she wrote...

I like the capacity of a 9, but love the trigger (and slimness) of a 1911
