Pretty observant there Greg. About 1pm today on a 4 lane I saw this buck struggling in the median of a 4 lane. A few hundred yards down the road set this car. Driver was on his phone so I kept going. After a mile or so I turned around. Couldn't stand that deer laying there in pain. Put him out if his misery with my 38 Special airweight from 10'. Stopped to talk to car owner and said it looked like I didn't need to put the car down, the deer took care of that.

A 4 lane road, open median, mowed flat ditches, and the guy hits the buck dead center at 1pm. WTF? The deer, probably thinking with the wrong head. I'd say.....

No. It was STILL the right thing to do, the way he did it.

I was helping with a project for Arizona game and fish about 8 years ago. The game and fish officer was late to the site. She explained a deer hit the bedside of her truck. She was trying to avoid it but it hit her. She had to call for someone on duty to put it down. Since she was not on actual duty she was not allowed too. Stupid in my mind. While she was on the phone a semi finnished the deer off.

My buddy who’s been an insurance agent since the 1980’s told me that DWI had been the number one cause of highway deaths since the invention of the automobile. Then about 20 years ago, deer took the top spot. I no longer drive much distance at night unless absolutely necessary. It’s like playing a video game called “Dodge them deer”

Yup, in PA you would have to genuflect three times in a full moon on the third Tuesday of the week. And you would still be ticketed by the squirrel cops. Believe it or not, NY used to be more "liberal" than PA when it came to finishing off a wounded animal. Then they started the same BS. But at least you can take home "road kill".

I've hit a couple, but in wooded areas - they just appear. Any time you see one, don't let your brain tell you "you can make it". Stomp on your breaks hard. A big doe hit me in the side of an F150 as I decelerated for a stop sign. I literally didn't know what hit me. I looked in the rear view and she got up and rambled off. There was a bloody spot under the rear view mirror where her nose hit, then her body tumbled down the side of the truck and ruined the whole bed side. Ranch Hand is making a killing as every pickup owned by anyone in the country is armored up.

I drive a lot of curvy mountain roads with no escape lanes and trees where guard rails should be. I constantly tell myself and rehearse in my mind 'no avoidance maneuvers'. Just hit the dern thing. Even at that I glitched last year when one popped out... Hit it anyway. Brakes yes, maneuver no!

Smart. A couple years ago leaving a race in Ohio on a narrow wooded road with no shoulders going maybe 40 mph, I saw her head pop up out of the ditch. Immediately hit the brakes, pulling my enclosed trailer behind, I still hit her. Ass on my side, head on passenger side. 2024 Denali...thought, well I'll be renting something to get 650 miles home. Hit her hard, very hard, couldn't believe the air bags didn't go off. Stopped and looked for damage, leakage, with cell light. Saw nothing. Drove to motel and looked again. Absolutely nothing, blood, hair, broken plastic....nothing. My lucky night....couldn't believe it.
