My first season of Freedom Benchhrest Competition

Well I have been busy and not much time to post anything, but wanted to share my first year experience.

In short, INCREDIBLE.

By the time I got my rifle and looads prepared I was able to compete in two Freedom Benchrest 600 yard events. Both were in Elbow Lake, Minnesota. What a great facility. Being a newbie, I had my coach and rifle builder with me, known here as ricco1949. This settled me a lot.

My first observation was this. What a class group of individuals. So kind and so helpful. This has only gotten better and cannot wait to see them all again.

My goal in my first match was not to embarrass myself. Would'nt you know it, my first relay on light gun. CROSSFIRE. DQ. What a start. But it was the folks I mentioned above that had me settled down in no time.

The afternoon relays for Heavy Gun went much better even though I used my LG. A first in group agg. At this very moment I knew I was hooked and was going all the way down this rabbit hole.

My next match was one month later. Happy to report no crossfires or DQ's. In fact, I placed first in LG agg and 1st in LG Overall. This for me was exhilerating and the guys around me made it even better. I cannot tell you how helpful and how much I learned from these experienced shooters.

On to Freedom BR 600 Nationals in Souix Falls a couple of weeks ago.

This experience was incredible. The new people and the shooting talent I witnessed was inspirational. Every single shooter always eager to help and answer questions. In fact I would like to name them all but am unsure about this online. Maybe initials for just a few. Ricco 1949 was with me in spirit , and then SH, RD, GW, CK, DK, FF and TJ. And so many more.

As for results, well a middle of the pack finish in LG. My rifle suddenly was not shooting the groups it had been. Oh well. Had an 8th place finish in LG smallest group and later by surprise was named Freedom Benchrest Rookie of the year.

Thanks to everyone for your kindness and help. I believe I have gotten to the bottom of "the larger groups" that occurred and cant wait to get back to the loading bench.

Better yet cannot wait to see you all at the next match.

I went to my first yesterday as well.
After several groundhog shoots I was offered by a member of the club to shoot one of his guns and use his rests. Down another rabbit hole I’ll go
