Hi all Loaded up some 30 cal Sierra 165 gr Hp bullets for the deer season coming up has anybody had experience with this bullet on deer .thank you.

It depends on how fast you are pushing them. They were always said to be a little “hard” by Sierra. I killed a few deer with them out of an ‘06 a couple decades ago and they worked fine. They were accurate.

I've loaded them in 308 Winchester. That bullet is like the hammer of Thor on large Texas Axis deer. I've never dropped an animal that fast with any other bullet. I've also heard from others it works great on bigger South Texas Whitetail.

Almost forgot, they run great through a 308 AR. You can use the same powder charge you would use for a 168 HPBT.

165g Sierra HPbt is a great deer bullet, and it is a little on the tougher side compared to the std 165g BTSP. I never found fault with the tad bit tougher issue. They are easy to tune to shoot very small groups. You see the benefit of this bullet on hard quartering frontal shots where you break a shoulder and the bullet will exit the back of the rib cage...my first buck.

Anyone used the Sierra 135 or 150 grain varminter on deer with the 308 win. or the 3006 and if so what velocity and how did it perform? Thanks.

I agree with several others, in 3006 velocities around 2800-2850 the bullet is a little harder maybe the jacket of the bullet is thicker. I thought I would have seen more tissue damage due to it being a hollow point. All bullets exited with out alot of damage on the exit. So if your looking for an exit hole this one will work.

My family has killed a LOT of deer with the Sierra 125 spt. Win 748 is our first choice of powder; Varget is the second. Both will have a Muzzle Velocity of 3100-3150 or better. I have a 14 Twist Hart that I am shooting the 125g TGK at 3300, Lapua brass. My two biggest ten-point bucks were killed with 125g spt at 3200 fps, rattled in one on the opening day, then rattled in what looked like his brother the very next morning. Both bucks were 200+ lbs, and they got real stiff-legged and then just toppled at bullet impact. I was 30 feet up the most crooked Sweet gun tree I had ever climbed.

We've killed 100's of head of game with them through the years. Mostly Axis deer, blacktail, feral sheep, mouflon sheep and boars. And a ton of African plains game. Actually our first African safari the PH refused to guide us because we were using those HP bullets. He said all we were going to be doing was wounding and tracking game. So he switched with another PH and it was a blessing in disguise. We shot well over 60 animals that trip out to just under 500 yds. All of them one shot kills up to and including eland. His client shot 8 animals with barnes TSX bullets wounded 4 we shot 3 of them as we came across them while hunting and got Clearance from his client to shoot. The other one was never found only blood.

I just wish the B.C. was better lol great bullet for deer I've killed more deer than l can count with it. You just need to put it in the right spot.
