More information would help.If you were new to benchrest and on a budget, what chambering would you recommend to yourself?
Thanks for looking.
Ok then you just answered a lot of questions. Simply go to shooter's corner and pick your poison. The last time I looked he had a large selection a short range stuff. Bob's a nice guy to deal with bought a few rifles from him.100 yards.
Been reloading for 3 decades.
I've already been tweaking on factory rifles for 2 decades. Just like to try a custom action and a low recoil cartridge designed around accuracy.
I don't compete against anyone but myself.
As mentioned above, the idea of a used benchrest rifle that's no longer in favor due to evolving competition changes makes sense to me.
5k for the rifle? Just curious were you get that number from? if he got a kauger BR, kelbly panda, even a single shot blueprinted rem, pierce, and so on, with a Krieger, bartlien, lilja barrel and a decent stock and trigger, plus the gunsmithing, he'd be well under 5k.Budget be damned, Lmbo !
This stuff doesn't play well with a budget !
Savage is budget.
There are allot of AR style rifles with custom barrels out there. Looks interesting. Idk those prices.
Custom br that i do know is around 5k, then a scope. Just to start shooting.
30br sure does last longer, upwards of 3k rounds "if you get a good barrel" cases last really long time.
I started with a 17lb 600yrd rifle. Cases last a long time. 2k rounds.
i found short range 1,2,300 yrd, (no group games around here) 30 br.. not really a group cartridge.
6ppc or smaller for group but can't compete to hitting same size x's with 30br.
Raising a family & doing this hobby is gonna be trying. The start up will sure make you pucker up.
I've been considering that option also. Thanks for the suggestions.Ok then you just answered a lot of questions. Simply go to shooter's corner and pick your poison. The last time I looked he had a large selection a short range stuff. Bob's a nice guy to deal with bought a few rifles from him.
My favorite rifle right now is a Hammonds built, Hall actioned, 17lb 6ppc. It has a few barrels. The shortest is 26" and is a hammer. It's a blast at short range......Just something to think about......Best of luck....100 yards.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^6ppc no turn. Hard to make them shoot big.
I understand your thinking, but I truly have more fun with a Harris bipod sitting on a carpet sample.I would invest heavily into rests and optics as well. I’m sort of in the same boat, but looking more into longer range Benchrest. Better rests allows for more consistency and thus greater accuracy.
This.Easy button is the 6br.
Plenty of reloading components for it. (barrels and twist rates, bullets, brass, powder and loaded ammo)
A little more of a challenge, 6PPC or 30br
Can't go wrong with any of the 3
