Freedom Benchrest allow 40lb metal Rear Rest?

There will be a change and if you saw what was being used you would think otherwise. All my life I restored classic muscle cars and sports cars and built and rebuilt engines. I dont want to slap a bunch of 25 to 40 pound plates with channel iron wrapped in tape and sluck them to a match.

Then dont slap on plates. Just because another guy is doing it doesnt mean you have to.

To get away from rear rests I want to use the front rest and current rules to make a point. I go to matches and see guys using hammers to drive the steel or carbide feet into the concrete or wood bench surfaces. It’s very common practice. Why do they do it? Obviously to eliminate horizontal movement of the rest. That is a mechanical process no different that driving a nail into a board. Under Freedom rules should this be legal? The way I read it, no. You have effectively increased the weight of the rest to several hundred pounds, maybe more.

From the Freedom website;

“The Front and Rear Rests may not be
mechanically attached to the bench, rifle or to the other rest.”

I’m not trying to stir the pot. I’m trying to show how rules get pushed to the maximum and the rules themselves need to be very specific and concise. Why not keep the old rules for LG and HG and come up with a true Unlimited class in Long Range Benchrest? Allow anything in that class to push the envelope while not pushing shooters out of the sport because they don’t have the means, time or desire to keep up with the new technology.

Just a thought.
Dave.
