You missed it by one WW, it was Alvin York, of Tennessee, that was issued a M1917 during WW1 (American Expeditionary Force), not Audie Murphy. Murphy fought in WW2, and your 'Average" GI was issued a M1 then.That is a 1917 that is what Audy Murphy actual used not the Springfiold 1903 they always show him with in movies and in pictures!
Didn't Weatherby use some of these for his early builds as well. I know in early 1990's I think Kimber was still selling sporterized P1917's I think someone was I saw them for sale for years in Gun Buyers Anual magazine release.
