Does anybody still think the 40x is special?

I have one of those actions also. No markings, just the serial number!. Great little action. Changed bolt with a PTG coned bolt.
Would you mind posting some pictures of your rifle?

I've been trying for years to identify my rifle, which sounds very similar to yours.

Some weird things came out of Remington. Red Cornelison handed me a left port right eject 40X in about 1994 and asked me to give it to one of the Texas Shooters that was shooting at the Crawfish. This was a receiver only and I don't remember who I gave it to. Red said that it was one of two made. At that time I didn't know enough to even look it over.

Well, it has a Clyde Hart barrel, so you are talking early 60's. Call Jim Hart in Apulia for info

Somebody thought mine was special enough to feature on the lead in on this article...

That is a walnut stock painted, BTW. Hart 27 1/4 with a Vais or Hart (IDR) brake, 2 ounce Jewell, 22-250.

The work on the stock and the butt plate was done by a friend (deceased now) in Cortland NY.

Emmett, and the group, I came home from my first tour in RVN in summer of '70. Home for 30 days, and then back for my second. My Father and I went car shopping the next morning, and a blood red 68 Hemi Road Runner Coupe came home with me. Today, I would put it up against anything made in the USA as a street hammer and Chick Magnet. NOTHING made today except the upcoming 2026 541 horse Charger 2dr even comes close...

A 40X Road Runner?

Two guns of this vintage were in match use yesterday. I visited a match with my International, the “stock” version. It did very well. I met an individual that had a 40-X with a 1.5 inch straight barrel on it.

His barrel is larger in diameter by a good amount than the 1.35” receiver and I thought the radius scalloped into the barrel to make the junction look good was especially nice. He came across it ina store many years ago.

I use serval 40-X’s in matches. They can still do well with the original barrels on them.

The 40X was the best thing going when it was first released. Until then, accuracy shooters were primarily using surplus 98 Mauser actions. Suddenly a guy could order a bench gun pre-made by Remington. Life was good.

By today’s standards the 40X is a crude item but it sure made a splash in its day.

I have a 40X repeater for sale

My first 'real' rifle was a 40X. Single shot, trued, Jewell trigger, Schneider barrel, McMillan stock, Leupold BR-D 24X scope. It was the class of the field in the 90's for Silhouette.

Had a 40X RF, similar set up but still had the factory barrel.

I got one about ten years ago, and I guess it's prolly the reason I joined this forum.
A friend of my wife, who owned a tattoo shop took one in on trade for work he did. My wife, being a good wife of a gun-nut, told me about it, saying "Adam wants to sell it."

I went and looked, and decided I should have it, and it would be the nicest rifle I owned at the time. Cartridge was 22 BR Rem. -- I had no clue, and I needed help. This Forum was the place for me.

I think that package is from the early eighties, Leupold 24X fixed scope, which I've since sold for -- 400 I think. I paid Adam 600 for the deal, so I think I'm OK on it.

It shoots pretty good, but it's got a tight neck which requires neck turning, I've shot groups in the .2's, but generally sub .5 is my standard. I don't think I'm the guy to wring the best out of it, nor do I really care. For me it's just another squirrel gun -- Oh yeah --also an Iconic piece of Remington history. ;) jd

I called Hart and spoke to a woman who agreed to have Jim look over the pictures. I sent the pictures several times but never heard back.
