MTR Rebuild Complete!

Got the barrel today while I was at the range shooing my score with my @1. When I got the notice that the barrel was here I couldn’t wait to get home and PLAY

And Play I DID!

Took the necessary measurements and added the “Included shims from Lilja” to the barrel for the correct headspace of .043” torked the barrel screws down to start with at 35ips and set the action screw tork to 20ips (which is where she liked it) for the 1st go around.

Mounted the scope in the lapped rings and bore sited it in and its ready to go if tomorrows weather is accommodating.

I was lucky yesterday as well in that I found 2 bricks of Lapua Center-X @ Whidden so that will be here tomorrow as well for testing!

Really excited to give this a go and see what it will do.

After the setup I decided to run a patch down with some Rimfire cleaner just to clean the barrel and then decided to run my bore scope down it.

HOLY BAJIMINI CRICKETS! I couldn’t believe how that bore looked in comparison to my other 2 barrels from CZ! Absolutely NIGHT & DAY difference! I’ll include those barrel pix for those that are interested in it!

Looking at the before and after I have to believe that this gun won’t shoot better then the original MTR barrel!

Time will tell!

I recently bought the same. The difference between the Varmint and American stock as far as sheen is night and day. What did you do to your stock to get it to shine?

I too will be starting from scratch and have yet to shoot it. Time will tell if I go to a Lilja. I'm guessing I will. Good looking setup!

I have a Lilja on one of mine. Quality barrel held to tight tolerances, and properly hand lapped. Not only do they shoot well they resist fouling and carbon ring buildup because of the mirror finish they provide. I clean the carbon ring on the L3i barrel twice as often as the Lilja. Looks great, I'm sure it will shoot great too!

Thanks Mike,
I put 14 coats of MinWax Polyurethane on it with 600-1500 grit wet and dry sanding in between coats.

I’ve done some preliminary testing and I can tell you I’m very happy with the Lilja barrel! I plan to tweak my setup so hopefully it will only get better. I’ll keep you up to date as things progress!

Agreed 100%! Didn’t take much to clean and very little carbon build up in the chamber!

That rifle looks balanced visually to my eye. Much more so than the factory 20" barrel does to me. I've had a couple centerfire Lilja barrels and was very pleased with them. The bore in yours looks great! 10's & X's!!
Thanks so much! I’m still working on my setup yet and fine tune things but I’m excited thats for sure!

Here are a few more images of it in my current setup. I’ve ordered a custom Protektor bag for my rest and I’ve got an opportunity to pick up an older Sinclair front rest that my “new” bag will fit on. Just not sure if I should pick up the Sinclair just yet.

Well I finally got out this morning to do some ammo & setup testing with my new MTR Rebuild that I finished. Some of you may remember my past threads and probably wondered why not show groups or targets shot. Well I’m out in the country and we always have wind so it’s not always easy to shoot for consistency/groups but I do try.

Something else you’ll notice is I was able to get a new front rest from a person over on RFC. Real nice guy and I did some cleanup on it and added a calibrated level and fixed a cracked screw cap.

This morning was not ideal but favorable so I setup to do some testing with my new front rest and MTR.
Many of you may not think this is all that great but I’m very pleased with the results. I did test 5 different ammo’s in this setup and hands down it really liked SK Long Range! So in the end I just purchased 2 bricks from Whiddens.

Above is the setup from behind looking North. My mobile target is just to the left of my burm set at 50yds.

I started out shooting just a little bit of Norma Tac 22 to warm the barrel then just for fun gave some Magtech ago for groups. All shooting was done at 30x and moving from left to right and moving from the bottom going up with the 1st target considered FOWLERS. One could even argue that the 1st 2 targets should be considered but thats for you to decide.

In the end the best groups hands down are the SK Long Range with Standard + & Match Rifle as a close 2nd. (As a side note the last target on the STD + I blew a shot which gave me the .796 group size. Without that I’m in the .450-.500 range) Something that I have notice is the horizontal stringing of the Lapua and even other groups show that. Not sure why that is but I may tighten up the sides of my bag rest and see if that helps. All in all I’m really pleased as I’ve wanted to be able to shoot consistent groups at .300 and under and as of right now I think with the best 2-3 above I should be able to do that.

Also this barrel only has about 300-350 rounds through it so I’d think this should gradually get better as I shoot it.
Now to keep an eye out for SK LR ammo

Thanks for looking!

My 1st score shot with this setup at our local tournament/shoot. The 1st 2 targets are a bit sloppy but I’ll take them for the 1st time out with this setup.
