6-PPC for hogs

A well placed shot will kill anything right where stands, the 6 ppc will be just fine
I agree with you 1000%. The 6PPC has often been described as "the most accurate cartridge ever developed out to 300 yards". Built on a lite sporter configuration I wouldn't hesitate to carry it on any hunt in the US plus, I can't see well beyond 300 yards anyway~!

In acout 1982 I took a vacation in Montana and stayed in a 120 year old log cabin near Sealy Lake. My client allowed a professional Outfitter to stay on the property during the summer. The Outfitter spent his days scouting the area for Elk trails. He told me that in+deason his clients paid him a lot of money to guide them on trophy hunts, Since those clients were all city-slickers and didn't shoot often or well he made them carry large caliber rifles. The objective was that since they didn't shoot that well if they did hit an elk he wanted that animal down regardless of where it was hit.
Since then I've always carried a .45-70 when hunting Coyotes~LOL~!!

Kinda funny-

We always shot them - between eyes w/ 22LR- killed them dead-

What makes you think a 6ppc won’t??….
I agree with your comment about the .22LR, but a small group of guys I went out with for the first time thought otherwise and ragged on me all day about my carrying a 9422 in .22-Mag. They all had bigger caliber CF rifles. One had a .30-06.
I went hunting one time with a "poacher" who carried a Marlin BA rifle in .22-Mag and saw him drop a deer in one shot from about 80 yards.
There are a lot of licensed hunters who don't really know anything about caliber potentials or shot placement.

What would you think of a rifle weighing 6.5 pounds chambered in 6MM-PPC shooting a 68 grain bullet for hog hunting~? Great weight for carrying all day, super accurate caliber, very accurate rifle with the abllity to hit the hog in the eye~!
I think it would work completely fine. But if I was planning on shooting pigs with a bullet in that weight class I would just go with a basic 223 and leave the brass behind.

When the shooting action heats up, the last thing you will want to do is be digging thru the weeds looking for your ppc brass.

I just happen to have a stainless Ruger 77 in .223 with a paddle stock and plenty on new Lapua brass. I honestly never gave the using of a .223 a thought. But, going along with your comment I would still have to "dig thru the weeds" to retrieve my Lapua brass. especially since it's Lapua~!!

A poorly shot hog with a light bullet might be healthy enough to take out some of his anger management issues on the shooter. Properly placed...fine. We shoot them off our pastures regularly.
Your milage may vary. I have seen dogs injured by well shot hogs that died a few minutes later.

Good Hunting,

K
Hmmmmmm~!!, That's a thought~!!!

I agree. But that's why I go with LC brass and leave it behind. All of my pig loads are once fired LC brass and I don't stress over picking it up. About 8 years ago I found 1000 pieces for $45. It was dirty range pick up but works perfect for pigs

I got the Lapua brass for a really good price anf it's suppose to be loadable many times. However I know the LC brass is excellent and I should probably pick some up if I see some at a great price.

I have enough fully prepped OFB (single headstamp) 5.56/.223 brass to share if you wish to go that route. What twist is your bbl? I can include some appropriate weight bullets as well, up to 80 grs.

For Elk, Moose and black bear?

The rifle is an early Ruger 77 which has a 1:12 twist and and cannot shoot 55gr and over bullets. I'm going to try the 53ge and 52gr. Depending on how well they do I might try weights down to 40gr.

I don't think for a nano-second that the 6ppc won't work. AND I do think that .22LR will work as long as the rifle can shoot well. It's all about shot placement~!

You should be able to stabilize 55 gr bullets in 1/12” twist, the original M16/M16A1 has 1/14”twist and M193 55 gr FMJBT was standard.
When I qualified in Basic Training with the M16A1 in 1979 with iron sights and young eyes, even the 360 meter silhouettes were no problem.

Try the Sierra 63gr semi point. Very accurate in a 12 twist and performs very well on game.
Good luck,
Aaron
