WTB Southbend Heavy 10

I believe the Heavy 10 uses Timken roller bearings, But Yes, I agree a Precision Matthews 13x40 or even 12x36 is a better machine. It's hard to find a machine that old in excellent condition, And for the price you're better off getting a new Taiwanese machine with a dro already installed.

I know a lot of Gunsmith's used the heavy 10, But those machines are mostly wore out relics of a bygone era.

I had an old Southbend 13, It was cool and all, But the machines I have now are far better.
Not Timken bearings in a Heavy 10. 2 piece bearings in 2 sets, similar to rod end bearings in an engine. They use wicks and a manual oil system.
I have a Heavy 10, 1955 vintage IIRC and it fits my needs, but I spent a LOT of time on it when I first got it to fix numerous wear and tear issues. Definitely not for everyone.

That’s great! Mine has served me well and I’d like to say I wouldn’t want to be without it. Show some pictures when you get setup.
Will do
I’ve run this machine before
It’s a beast, pretty tight too
Nothing wrong with my victor but this has a taper attachment and steadies which I’ve been unable to source for my victor

My 1966 SB13 is in dire need of a paint job, but otherwise has been the perfect gunsmithing lathe.

Acer 13x40
Enco 12x36 that i still have
Leblond Regal Servo shift 15x30
Clausing Colchester 15x50
1963 Southbend 10L ( Heavy 10)

My favorite has been the little 1963 Southbend Heavy 10.

Its does everything i could ask for in a riflesmith shop!
I like the way you re-wired it, is that a 3-phase VFD conversion with tach?

That is a pretty sweet Heavy 10.

Sold off my old Clausing 6300 and got an Acer 1440G Dynamic (Actually a "Top Turn" 1440G). SAME MACHINE as Acer made in Taiwan. Looked real hard at the PM 1440GT. Acer weighs 500 lbs more, 5HP 3 phase, D1-4 spindle. Way more stuff available than D1-5 and the smaller spindle bore hasn't affected me. Bed ways almost 3" wider. 1-9/16" spindle bore. I run it off a 10 HP rotary. A few minor shortcomings like the carriage lock is on the far side of the bed, and the gear selector levers dont have real positive detents. Need to clean chip pan from the back side. Compared to the old Clausing it is a breath of flesh air.
Same $$ as PM 1440 GT Taiwan when the smoke cleared.

I also just upgraded to the same Lathe as your Acer but it is branded "Turn Pro" and it is in like new condition. Very nice machines.

I like that chuck cart
Im stealing that idea
It's not my idea, I stole the idea from my old boss I worked for a long time ago. Quite handy to have, Of course mine is similar but my own design. I made it out of old barrels and there is heater hose wrapped around the barrels to keep the registers on the chucks from getting any damage.

I like to call it my "Chuck Caddy"

Are your sight glasses leaking? Mine leaked like a sieve. I came up with a good fix involving some lathe time(!) and some 12L14, a few cheep parts from McMaster, and a AR 15 butt stock thread tap. (1-3/16"-16)
Nope, Mine does not leak at all, I changed out all of the fluids when I got it. I use the right stuff too, Not hyd oil.

My sight Glass on my enco leaked and I put some kind of honda motorcycle gasket sealer around it and re-installed it and it hasn't leaked since. Show some pix of the fix you did to repair the leaks. Can't remember the name of the sealant though.
