Savage Model 12 Target Action

After much thought and having a slice of humble pie, I'm now considering the above action in the dual port configuration. I have owned several of the Model 12 LRVP's and I have to say, they were shooters right out of the box. I just never had any luck with the factory Accu-Triggers or the aftermarkets, however. I have heard the Jard's are good and now with Bix'n Andy putting out a new trigger, I have a 50/50 shot with one of those if I decide to go this route. There are plenty of top shelf barrel manufactures out there offering pre-fits. So, the biggest plus to considering the Savage action is that it would keep me way under budget and I would have complete peace of mind in the accuracy department. Looking around trying to find them is the challenge. Seems that everyone is sold out including Northland Shooters Supply's. Time is on my side though.

For those who are using this action, I would like your input and pic's.

depending on what price you’re getting it for, I wasn’t impressed with the action, I bought a model 12 fclass last year. Was told the gouging in the chamber was acceptable, and the tool marks on the action are completely normal. If the price was going to be close to a lower end custom action I would go custom. If you can find one of their older target actions in the configuration you want that is also a good option as the quality has gone downhillIMG_5569.jpegIMG_5576.jpeg

Excellent input! Thanks for the pics too.

Mike is this going to to be for your 20 vartarg?
In a nutshell, I'm currently reconsidering my options due to an unspoken situation. Later I can elaborate. But yes, I'm considering doing the 17FB, 20VT and possibly a 223. Either way, I will be online for the 2027 rat season!

I shoot with 3 RBLP PTA's Early on I passed on the dual ports
because of finding various stocks for the action screw pattern.
left feed and eject is not a hinderence, and I prefer it......I may
take one of the PTA's and mill an opposing port it not for the
sake of loosing more weight so i can work with an even heavier
barrel and stay within a rule.

Through almost 2K rounds, have throughly enjoyed my 7 twist LRPV in .223. 500 yards into 3 and 4” gongs can be a challenge, particularly in a breeze but the gun is VERY accurate . Yeah, the bolt lift could be lighter, but it’s not that bad and I’m shooting it slowly off the bench anyway. Extraction and ejection have been flawless. Adjusted the target Accutrigger to just under 1lb.

Here’s my Savage Target Action. Straight 284 with a Bartlein finished at 32”. I sent it to Larry Racine for the chamber job and he lapped the lugs a little when he chambered it with my reamer. No other bolt work. It’s got a bolt lift kit that probably does nothing. Jard trigger. Stock is a Jason Avila WFO with a masterclass stocks 3 way butt and McMillian cheek riser (that I don’t use). I bedded it and put about 13 coats of tru oil on it.

At the end of the day, barrels, stocks and mounts cost the same regardless of the action. A Jard is only $200 cheaper than a Remington clone Bix, and Jard makes a Remington trigger as well so that could be a wash. So the upgrade in going for a custom vs a savage is the $800-1000 initial investment. (I’m thinking $1600-1800 for a BRMXD or a Bat M). Mine started with a Shillen pre-fit in a used savage benchrest stock and then grew from there.

The gun shoots well(better than me) but I think the savage ignition system leaves a lot to be desired. It goes bang every time but I think the firing pin release being on the side of the bolt with that sloppy cross pin is not as consistent as those of every other action.

I am by no means a Bruno’s fan, but they have 2 right/right and 1 right/left/right in stock. Changing the bolt head is easy if it’s not the correct bolt. I will say the newest target actions are stamped 110s. I had some issues (Bruno’s) that I had to send the action back to Savage. While on the phone with customer service I asked why it was not a 12 and they said moving forward they would all be stamped 110. Mine was manufactured in April of 2024.

When i got into shooting something beyond a factory rifle the first projects were Savage actions that received prefit barrels, triggers, etc. Fun and pretty accurate, but still clunking by comparison. But..... I purchased an action from Sharpshooter Supply that he trued, timed, and installed their custom trigger. It was as smooth and sweet as many customs for a fraction of the price, and in a dumb move I sold that rifle. Check out that option.

One of my biggest regrets was not buying a bare target action years ago when they were like $450. I reached out to James at Northland back in March, he said they have not had target actions in stock for about a year, and the last price was $700

I have a #12 action with a Shillen prefit in 6 Dasher. Besides being half the cost, it's a tackdriver.
Rifle Basix trigger at 8 oz, McMillan stock. Berger 105 and Varget.
I easily made High Master midrange with it.

When discussing the Savage target actions, it's nice to know what
action it really is. The PTA's are blue printed and only come with the
red blade trigger, with a safety warning laser etched across the action,
I've seen trigger swaps then the seller claims a TA is a PTA, when it's not.
Savage has no plan at this time to re-designate the model 12 target
"actions" or the "PTA's".......

Good point to consider the stock being harder to accommodate!
