Oregonian's

I live up in vernonia, and ironically I am down here in burns shooting squirrels right now!
I love varmint hunting and varmint rifles. I have everything from a 22lr up to 25-06 for varmints. Love shooting coyotes, pigeons, starlings, crows, ground squirrels, and anything else that is a problem

Just a little Oregone information if you don't know ?
COSSA Range East of Bend, sets a rat Shoot up most every year.
Gerry Louis or Jerry the Sports Writer sets it up.

I live in Brookings and grew up in the woods on SW end of Willamette valley. Back in high school late 70's we would go into the farm country that was close to the river and roll nutrias with our deer rifles. They would come out in the late evening and be out grazing in the grass seed fields. We would also road hunt them off I-5 because it had the best views and easiest to cover ground. Those were the days! lol.
Loved High desert and there were places like Christmas Valley where farmers would give you a brick of 22 and a sketch of where to go. Now it is mainly 'pay-for-view' shooting with 'outfitters' for non-locals.
Used to shoot rockchucks with some guys who were based out of LaPine cause they knew the spots. And then it got popular and idiots now stay put and eliminate entire colonies so can't go back the following year.
My Favorite zone is from Hart Mountain east to Steens and then South to Denio-Trouts and then Back west on 140 towards Lakeview. There is an old 1800's bar in Denio that would have a sage rat weekend rodeo every spring and lots of fun, drinking n bbq mania in the evening. And then the farmers started poisoning so that is over, Bummer.
Coyote's come and go it seems. Been pretty scant for quite a few years due to, I guess, not much food. Don't see the jack rabbits like in past years and also hardly any deer, other than around ag zones with grass. There is also lots of calling pressure so they get wary. I have a friend in Burns who lives for this so I get reports. He would do the annual Lakeview coyote derby and the last years have been dismal. Seems like everything is going to shite.
I have 20,000 acres of natl forest and private timberlands to hunt deer out of my back door. We have had some huge fires in the last decade which opened up alot of country. Blacktail hunting was not bad at all if one would get out of the truck and hoof it a little. I noticed in the last few years the big bucks have all but disappeared. And then I found out the local kids have been buying those chicom 600 buck thermal scopes and night hunting for horns.
There are still good niche places to recreate in Oregon, as it is a huge state, but anymore it always seems like trying to get away from people is the main goal, rather than finding good hunting spots. I guess Oregon is not the only state with this problem.
There are waaay more pro 2a in Oregon than not, contrary to popular belief. But the minority freaks in our legislature have this mail in ballot fully controlled and rigged to go their way, even if by just a few 10th of a percent. Only the Supreme Court can save this state but that will be in a year or more before we find out. In the interim there isn't a sheriff in any rural area who gives a hoot whether you have a hi-cap mag or not.
The best thing about varmint shooting is it enables you to be able to go have fun year around with no seasons, limits or other regulatory complications. If there are no varmints then I get equal jollys out of pinging steel and smoking rocks at distance. In fact anymore I prefer to do this as I can find spots much easier that are away from the yahoos, and also away from the ever present urbanite 'overlanders' traversing the high desert in their brush rash free decked out Tacomas and Toyota FJ Cruisers. Thank you OnX.

I think you may be referrning to Bill Lewis of COSSA and Gary Lewis the huntng/shooting writer. I worked with Bill Lewis for years before he was the chief engineer at Nosler; a great guy in all regards.

The COSSA range does not offer any sage rat shooting, care to clarify?

The 'best' all around shooting range, hands down, on the left coast is in Grants Pass, Or. https://jcsa-gunrange.com/

Sometime the Grants Pass one does offerf rat shooting: I remember one time there were about 8 of us on the upper rifle range shooting 100-300 and this lone ground squirrel showed up out of nowhere and ran across the berm behind the 100 yd targets, tail in the air like he was waving a flag, and in due course there was a barrage of 8 rifles shooting at him! lol, Dust was flying everywhere and the little critter was zigzagging back and forth full speed until he finally escaped! Wish I had a video of that. Paper gets boring sometimes.

Those damn squirrels have screwed up more that 1 test.
We won't talk about the coyote @400, let's just say it pays to have a round in the chamber when you drop the hammer. Lol

lol. I have seen elk above the gong but ...

We generally call cease fire when the heard shows up, I've counted close to 50 in the heard.
We had a cougar running around last year, haven’t heard about it being around this year.
Maybe he caught a flier?

Don't live in oregon but spent 6 months hunting and fishing there when i lost my job. Trained my old gundog to be a rabbit slayer and smoked my first yote just outside of sisters.I love varmint and upland hunting. I have hunted boar, turkey, waterfowl, but meh, rather smoke a pile of jacks and chukar.

Glad I don't live there though. Damn commies ruin everything....

Being in Oregon might be just okay. My banker said no for some reason
I think you'd have to rob a bank to afford the asking price on that one. Incredible home and property for sure. When it's sold, it will likely not be to an Oregonion.

When I moved to central OR from a logging camp in BC in 1975, the average home here ran around $15K - $25K. Now the mean average for the same area runs $800+K.

For the young now starting out, it's almost impossible to buy a decent home around these parts, the nice places are all gobbled up by folks from CA arriving with beaucoup cash from a home sale in that overpriced real estate area, and thereby shutting out the mid-level locals. I'm sure this is not unique to this area either.

It's not just the price, you'd have to self insure too as my guess is no insurance place will provide fire coverage these days. There's a reason so many places in forested or hard to defend locations are up for sale, they either can no longer get fire insurance (which a mortgage requires) or it's so costly as to be prohibitive.

I used to live in La Grande and that's a wonderful ranch if you're into mostly elk hunting, otherwise just a nice place to be away from people.

That's not a house... It's a hotel!!
I can imagine how much property tax on a $22+million place would be aside from the maintenance costs...
At a minimum you would need two household staff and one grounds keeper...
I'm reminded of a famous quote by the senior Mr Rockefeller that he gave to a reporter that asked him how much his new yacht had cost... "If you have to ask... YOU cannot afford it...!!"
Call me up Lottery Office...!! I've always wanted to write a check with a number followed by six zeros... ;)

Scroll down and watch the video it’s pretty interesting. I think the owner Dunn is a high tech guy and looks like he had his fun and is rolling it for a good profit, I’m sure. Blake Shelton is in the video bow hunting a elk.
