Ultimate Coyote Rifle

While I really like the 6mm ARC in a bolt action configuration & I would consider the rifle & cartridge to be a fine coyote set up. Ultimate Coyote rifle may be a bit of hype IMHO. Question becomes ultimate within what criteria. If you want to save pelts the 6mm ARC may fall rather low on the list. If less expensive ammo is a criteria for a Coyote rifle then 6mm ARC may not be my first choice.

So again I truly am a fan of the 6mm ARC, Though I am not exactly a fan of hype.

If I was wishing to save pelts my 1st choice would probably be 17 Fireball. Followed by 20 VT, really close here IMHO. 221 FB & 223 Rem, have wonderful merit with the task of reducing the coyote numbers as well while preserving the pelt.

If I had the 6mm ARC out Coyote hunting & a buddy was shooting a 17 FB, 204 Ruger or 223 for example; I would be hard pressed to suggest that my rifle choice was the ultimate rifle for the task at hand.

If I was looking to save pelts & I had my 17 FB with its favorite 30 grain Berger or 20 Vartarg with a select few bullet options I may be inclined to suggest I had the ultimate Coyote rifle in hand.

If the 6mm ARC is an ultimate coyote rifle then I would suggest that there are better than a dozen other rifles & cartridges that may be judged as the ultimate rifle for coyote hunting as well.

I could also go along with the thought that the rifle I had in hand at the time of having a shot opportunity was the ultimate coyote rifle. Even If i had a 7mm Magnum in hand at the time that may be a ultimate rifle to dispatch a coyote, for a 15 yard or a 600 yard shot.

I defer to the most experienced predator hunter I know, my son in law. He has killed more coyotes and fox with all kinds of calibers. But he says everything he has used takes a back seat to his old time cartridge of .243 win. He has a very similar setup shown in the video with those heavy tripods and thermal scopes. I believe almost all of his coyote hunting buddies have abandoned the 22 cals for various 6mm variety cartridges. And using most are using 70-80 grain bullets. He says they are just much more efficient killers for long shots.
I may suggest that this a sign that pelts are near worthless in recent times. In that case a dead coyote is the primary goal & a 243 as well as the 6mm ARC is certainly up to the task. barrel life could give the 6mm ARC the nod when choosing between 243 win & 6mm ARC IMHO

I’m a pretty successful predator hunter/caller, and I think a coyote rifle should be short and somewhat light, with the weight in the barrel and a high end optic like the Swarovski z5-Z8i.

I’ve shot a lot of 22s and they all give things up to a small or medium 6mm shooting a bullet weighing 60-80 grains.

If you think it’s cool to shoot them at hundreds of yards, then just take whatever you can shoot the best at 600 with, but that’s far from my cup of tea.
Im really surprised how heavy some of the setups are that Ive seen that my son in law uses. Those really heavy tripods ,combined with a precision rifle and thermal scopes are not that light when put together. Those tripods make for a very steady shot. My grandaughter killed 7 yotes and 9 fox this past season with that gun and she just turned 13 yrs old. She likes it much more than deer hunting because they are not sitting in one spot. She says its more exciting. I think her dad has her hooked.

:) :) :) :) :) :) I keep telling the guys at the range about the 243 Win, but they won't listen. What does an old gray beard with bifocals, a Flip Phone and homemade cross sticks know about hunting critters of the small vital area variety!:)

Since it’s the ultimate cartridge I was close to right
I made for myself a 6mm AR (no "C"). Basically a 6 Grendel.
Howa mini, Boyd stock. When contouring barrel I put calipers and mic in tool box and turned till it looked good. Right at 0.75”.
Just have done sight in, not critters yet.

You know, I like that stock. But I’m going to have to stick with my original 6 arc, a Sako 6PPC. You can’t beat a 65gr bthp at 3400 fps. Drops em every time.

I've been hunting Wiley for a long time (over 55 years)!!! My favourites are 22-250 (55 SGKat a modest 3400f/s) out to 450, or long range 25-06 (120 SGK SBT at 3k)!!! And, if you're worried about getting winded, use Vixen Piss!!!! Old Wiley gets curious and comes to you!!!! That is why the Rem 1100 shotgun, loaded with turkey buck, is laying on the ground, pointed downwind!!! The fox urine also draws in deer following the elusive fox trail!! Never seen a need for the in between 243!!! That 25-06 will out range the 243 when looking at true heavy hunting bullets!!!

A little advice from an old timer!! When in doubt at long range, aim high, at the top of the back on a Hail Mary shot! Wiley will hear the bullet impact sound first if you over compensated! Then the report of the rifle, echoing all around!!! Wiley will move closer to you for a second shot, most of the time!!!! NEVER SHOOT LOW!!!

1.5 yotes a day 365 strong. Even a 40 hr a week job is 2.2 a day. 3.44 per day already this year(no days off).
I should have said this past season he's over 400, & the season before was 552.

To me, a season starts in the early fall & runs through whenever you quit in the spring.

The vast majority at night, & he has most on video, if you doubt the numbers.

When I had a SAKO Vixen Hunter in 6mm PPC, I spent time developing an accurate load an ,I wound up using a 70gr Nosler bullet over H322.

The perfect coyote rifle doesn't exist. There is the perfect coyote rifle for YOU.

For me there is the perfect coyote rifle for where I'm hunting. I might be down in some mesquite thicket where I'm not going to see a coyote 40 yards away or I might be sitting on a hillside and can see for miles. Most of the time I like a fast handling lightweight rifle with a scope with at least 40 ft of FOV and more is better most of my scopes have 1x-2x on the bottom end. In the thick stuff I like a shotgun preferably with a rifle barrel mounted under the shotgun barrels.

Suppressors, I'm old and do not have alot of years left. I've kill as many coyotes as I want. I've thought long and hard about a suppressor and I pretty much know that if I had to make a choice I think $1500 worth of gas would put more coyotes on the boards than a $1500 in suppressor/threading/ tax stamp would. I've had enough delayed multiple responses after shooting that I don't think a suppressor is that big of a deal.

Light and fast
