Not sure I should own up to this, but ...

I had an 'era' where I hunted hogs with 22 mag using only head shots. Did okay but missed a few. Hogs seldom stand still like deer. And almost always have their head moving.

Then got into deer hunting with my .44 rsb. First year I was pathetic but a lot of off season practice got me on track and I actually started making some heart shots over time.

Well, after some seasons had an opportunity at a smallish 6 and dropped him in his tracks. Drt. Gathered my gear, walked out and not a hole to be found in the hide. He was however now a 3 point. Entry hole was perfectly in ear, and exit obliterated offside antler.... Never to be found.

Must have missed by 2 feet! But what a shot it would have been on one of those hogs!
 
I had an uncle that lived in Junction,Tx. We would fish the Llano River with him in the summer. His fishing stories were extraordinary to say the least. He told me when I was about 12 that he had caught a blue cat that was so big that the river dropped a foot when he pulled it's head out the water. 46 years later I still laugh when remembering that story.
 
I forgot about the old Texas Cowboy that lived next door to us when I was growing up. He had scars on his back from where he was whipped. Not sure if I ever heard all of that story.
He mentioned chasing jack rabbits in his younger years, running up along side them, feeling them to see if they were fat enough to eat. ;)

So I'm sure everyone has heard stories of feats of marksmanship that make you want to beg, borrow, or steal every dime you can to make the wager that some shot can't be done. I've heard some ludicrous ones over the years, but think I now have a new favorite. I heard someone say they watched their Mom shoot bats (yeah the flying kind) with a .38 snub nose @ 600 yards.

Had an guy that lived a few miles away. Farmed a river bottom. He was working a field getting ready to plant. In this field was one of those huge river bottom pecan trees. Just so happened the tree was full of squirrels and he had his trusty .410 and a box of shells with him. He'd make a round with his tractor and disc, stop under the tree and shoot at a squirrel or two. The squirrels were high and he was thinking out of range. He ended up shooting the box of shells and gave up. After a while he passed under the tree again and a drop of blood landed on his hand. He stopped the tractor and sat a while. After a bit a squirrel fell, then another and so on. By the time he left the field he had 26 squirrels. I guess the look on my face gave me away but he swore it happened.

hey @ARW on that 5 lb catfish picture...that aint nuthin...I caught a shellcracker that was so gi-normus that when i got him in the boat the water in the pond dropped 5 feet leaving my little wooden carolina boat high and dry and I had to walk to shore!
...and to beat that, once when catfishing on the Cape Fear and netting a nice blue cat, the Timex watch i had gotten for Christmas on my 11th birthday slipped off my wrist. I got scolded by my mother for loosing my watch as that was a significant financial outlay for my family back them. Wonder of wonders, when i was about 16 myself a a few buddies were camping and fishing that same stretch of river. Billy Ray, my best fried hooked up a nice'un; he landed a nice blue that weight over 30 lbs. We skinned him and steaked him up for the campfire. When cleaning him his gut felt kinda crunchy and we figured it was the shells of river mussels he'd been eating. Lo and behold it won't mussel shells but my old Timex ----and it was still ticking !! like John Cameron Swayze used to say...They take a lickin but keep on tickin ! (I wrote Timex about this to try to get on a comercial but they didn't beleive me either. )
 
Had a guy tell me not to use cup and core bullets in any rifle that shoots a bullet over 3000fps. Said cup and cores are so fragile at that speed and the jacket gets so hot the core separates from the jacket in the barrel and it takes at least 200 yds for the jacket to catch up with the core.

What's the rest of the story? Does the jacket reunite with the core at that point? If so, looks like as long as the deer (or target) is over 200yds -- no problem, just a slight delay maybe.
 
Advice we were given in deer camp a few years back, " ....don't use them bullets! I shot a 12 point buck with a 7mag at 135 yards broadside right behind the shoulder and the bullet just bounced off and the deer ran away". :rolleyes: WD
 
The fact is, that probably most of us who have spent 50 or sixty years killing critters for a hobby or a living, have made some pretty unbelievable shots, and seen a lot of things that would likely be called outright bullshit.

I've seen some, and done some that are so crazy that most folks would roll their eyes in disbelief. Might as well just have a little fun and make up something even crazier. :p I think this thread has created a certified legal whopper zone. jd
