The Feb 14 edition of the PA Outdoor News contains a report of a black bear attack in Jim Thorpe, Carbon County, PA. The bear was mauling a man, and a neighbor shot the bear with 45- caliber pistol killing it. It was later revealed after testing that the bear had rabies.
The shooter was credited with saving the victim's life and most likely saving others from attacks because of bear was infected with the rabies virus. According to the report, the bear had been harassing people in the parking lot of a grocery store.
