Exploding crows

I know it’s rimfire but a 17 wsm with crows about 100 yards or a little more with elevation - well i don’t have pics but all that was left was one whole wing and some tail feathers ! Accurate and explosive on a crow ! Theirs is a crow season with wildlife commission and i was in the lawful season - only problem is crows are smart. They’re like my wife - they forget nothing and won’t come back for months for another shot !

I've taken my share of crows over the years. All but one was taken with a 12ga after the crows came in to the caller. It's fast & furious when them come in to fight. My single rifle kill was when I was hunting groundhogs with a custom 6mmAI. The crow landed in a dead tree that had a solid dirt hill behind it. It was 495yds away. I figured, what the hell, so I pulled out the rifle and let a 70gr Ballistic Tip fly. There were a few crows in the tree at the time and they all flew off. I thought I missed but my buddy swore that he saw one fall. We walked out to the tree and found a nice plump, headless crow laying there. It put a smile on my face. :D

Lots of good memories from a lot you guys growing up. I did the same as well. Nice to think about old times while the weather has been nasty out lately here. My father gave me a Remington 788 222 when i was a young kid. Imr4198 and my loading scale was stuck on 20grs for a long time growing up. 50gr spsx. The combo and rifle that made me.

Jrjones,
Your post touched me a bit. My dad gave me a Interarms Mini-Mark X for christmas when I was in 7th grade. 26.5gr of BLC-2, a CCI 400 and the Hornady 50gr SX. Like you stated this was the rifle and load that made me. Topped that rifle with a Redfield 1 3/4-5x Widefield set in low Weaver rings and used brass from the white box American Eagle 55gr FMJ ammo that I bought for $4.50 a box. I carried that rifle slung over my back on a bicycle till I got my drivers licsence and then it road on the seat next to me for years, good memories!
Thanks, Aaron

Here in Oklahoma we can only shoot crows a few months out of the year. Why? Who knows, but its in the regs.

I always wanted to shoot a crow with a varmint rifle. Never got a chance.

Shot a metric butt ton with a 12 gauge though.

^^^ It’s because of the migratory regs. worked out many years ago
with Mexico. Basically the U.S. wanted them to have limits and take it easy on the ducks and geese that winter there. In exchange they wanted us to take it easy on the crows that for some reason they like or feel sorry for. The season on crows can only be so many days per year but the states can determine what days.
Some states only allow hunting on weekends and so on.

We have a season in this state too, however, land owners are exempt if causing property damage, how well this is enforced who knows?

Yes, a few years ago I spent several years in Wisconsin caring for the folks and was on a farm for a while. The law said shooting crows in season only, OR if they were committing , or about to commit depredation.
Well all the farmers told me to go for it cuz any crow in the field is about to commit depredation.
I did it old school style and shot right out of the truck cab off the road. Can’t believe I never got pinched…I really hate crows and coyotes.

Nice story. I think about stuff like this all the time. It really meant something to me being able to do things like this growing up. The 222 Remington cartridge will always be a favorite. I love the 20 cals and wanted to combine the 2 cartridges so a 20-222 was only a matter of time.

Are there any advantages the 20 Tac gives over the 20 Practical ?

The law over here is a little convoluted , easiest way to describe is ," all birds are protected unless they're not ". This was for compliance with EU laws , I believe . We can only shoot under the T&C's of the applicable General License . Its also an offence to shoot any birds with the use of artificial light or night vision, which of course would be the easiest method of clearing barns of nuisance feral pigeons .

I used to calm them and shoot them with a shotgun years ago, but I haven’t done it in a long time. We have a few that regularly hang hang around the yard. They get a pass because they are pretty good at telling us if there are other critters up to shenanigans.

I just like the 30 degree shoulder of the 20 TAC over the 20 Practical!

Id like to do a 20 killer bee or something like that in a contender barrel. Not sure about dies tho. I see hornady brass around but everyone says its junk. Idk? Sure wld be a light weight little rifle. Crow popper.
