Good Enough.

You like single shot rifles, every hear of a Miller Arms "F Action"? ASSRA, American Single Shot Rifle Assn; runs competitions. Dean Miller built the Miller-DeHaas striker block actions. I worked with Dean to design the 32 Miller Short cartridge. It owns Schuetzenfest Matches. ASSRA responded by establishing a rule to require cartridges available before 1898. That is why CPA does the 32-20 CPA wildcat based on the original 32-20 (uses .312" bullets) to use the common .321-.322" bullets used in the 32-40, etc. Miller Arms responded by updating the original Milton Farrow (1880's) external hammer design and offering it. They only built about 15 to perhaps 20 before the company was sold to Dakota Arms. I own the rifle Dean's son Cyle built in .348 as a hunting rifle. I'll have to send you a picture one of these days.

Wow, is that predecessor to the Dakota model 10?

I like single shots but don’t know much about them compared to guys like you. My Dad always liked Ruger #1s, I kind of blew them off when I was younger. About 7-8 years ago I started getting into them a bit and the more I got into the more I appreciated them. I have 6-7 of them now including my Fathers old 338 which was his go to elk rifle.

I’ve always noticed the 1885 and Browning B78s, seen a few with gorgeous wood, that’s kryptonite for me. Never really gave them a second thought though until recently. Seeing a few posts by fellow forum members sharing their 1885s sparked an interest and I ended buying a couple recently. I love bolt actions but I have that covered and these single shots are something new. I like the history and wouldn’t mind picking up an original or two.

The Dakota Model 10 was my Dad’s ultimate single shot rifle. I’ve watched them over the years, they gone up in value considerably the last 3-4 years, kind of puts them out of my reach.

Zack with ODCR has a reamer I found in my Dad’s reloading stash, I had to sort through his stuff after he passed in August 24. Among the items was a reamer for a 250 savage improved. He use to work at Jensen’s in Tucson and shot BR back then, early 70s and had a 250AI built. He talked about that rifle several times over the years but it was sold decades ago but I plan on having a #1 chambered by Zack in 250AI with that reamer! Should be fun plus it’s my will remind me of my Dad.

The intrigue of single shots is the history, the cartridges and playing around with something new to me, something different.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but IMHO the Miller is a much better looking action. The lever on the 10 looks flimsy to me. The Miller hammerless model has been chambered in 416 Rigby and .500 3" Nitro Express.

When the founder of Dakota Arms died, sadly, Dakota dropped production of both Miller designs.
