Weatherby Vanguard rebarrel

I've done quire a few rebarrel/accurized Remington 700 and and savages in common calibers (308, A30-06, 6.5 creed, 7Prc). I have a weatherby vanguardmin 257 weatherby coming into the shop and am looking for a tenon print. I've not been able to find any prints. I am also wanting to double check before ordering a barrel (I will of course confirm with the barrel manufacturer), that a .25 caliber barrel is correct. I've read in some places that the 257 weatherby shoots a 6.5mm bullet, but that makes no sense to me as that would not seem to be correct, but as I've not dealt with this caliber what I think makes sense is irrelavent

It is a .257 . Metric equivalent to .257” is 6.5278 mm.

Thanks. Interesting that when looking at range rods on PTG's site. They show 25-257 and 264-6.5. 264 is actually 6.7056 mm. This is why I'm scratching my head as to what size barrel blank bore is needed.

Metric threads (at least on the old howa made ones) so make sure your change gears are capable. Make a test tennon before ruining a blank. My change gears do not track on every metric thread. Its .257. Never seen a print so I measure everything old school. I have done 3 of my own and had to releif cut the shoulders as they pulled hellish hard. Mag bolt face allows other options if you want to step away from 257 or weatherby in general.

First barrel I ever made was a Vanguard with metric threads.
Made a practice part to make sure the thread pitch was correct.

That's what thread pitch gages and micrometers are made for. I have always measured the receiver/barrel that I removed and gone from there, closing up the gap between the bolt nose and barrel as closely as possible without one contacting the other.

Why not just take the tenon dimensions from the factory barrel after you pull it?

This is correct…..my dad just chambered 2 barrels for our Howa1500’s. Good luck if you have to take the factory barrel off, never seen anything that tight before.

Maybe because "factory" fitting can at times be rather loose? The first rifle I re-barreled while in gunsmith school (that was over 34yrs ago) was my 700 Varmint Master. Comparing measurements taken from the receiver, and measurements taken from the barrel, I found .016" between the end of the bolt and lugs and the barrel. "Production" fitting is different than "custom fit". Many years ago, pre-interdnet, I remember reading in one of Frank DeHaas books, where he said he gets many requests for screw sizes or pin sizes, where the screw or pin is missing in some gun. Answer, you already have the hole, measure it! It's not a bad idea to make yourself a note book with a sketch and measurements for reference, later. Take your own measurements, unless you are satisfied being "average".
