Howa Mini Actions ?

A call to Howa and Legacy Sports and got nothing. I and others seem to have a problem with the clips falling out way to easy when carrying the gun around. With the clip release up in front of the clip where it is so easy to bump it. Has anyone come up with an idea to stop it from happening? Get gun shoots very well in 223 and bolt smooth as well as nice trigger. Just wish they would of fixed the clip release. My first and last Howa because of that.

I have a couple Mini Howas I use for coyote hunting and pack them for treks though thick brush and desert and have never had a problem with a magazine not staying in place. I am using the Bell and Carlson stocks. Not sure if stock design has anything to do with it.

You I’ll have to put in aluminum or steel bottom metal. Also, when you do replace the bottom metal replace the magazine release latch also. This will hold the magazine one place. There is another bottom metal that fits flush but I haven’t seen it or tried it. First thing I did was get rid of the plastic crap they called bottom metal. Considering getting rid of mine now 6.5 Grendel. Weapon shoots great but just don’t like how it feels. I have it in a Boyd’s AT-1 stock. This is personal preference on the feel but I just like bigger rifles. Too small for me.

I have a mini in 6ARC for predator hunting. Trekked all over with it and never had magazine come loose.

The AT1 is an odd shape, buddy had one and spent hours sanding and cutting it to look and feel better. Still clunky and ugly.
Minis I have replaced stocks, on has a Bell&Carlson, Oryx chassis, Boyd’s varmint and a factory wood.
Jefferson bottom metal and DIP.
Jefferson flush fit first generation is slick, I load it from the bottom and close the floor plate. My digits are too big to manipulate cartridges in from the top.
The B&C stock feels good and carries very nice, fit was good as well.

Lone Hunter took the words right out of my mouth. The big problem is it will coast a sh*t load to replace it. You can maybe also modify the magazine to allow more purchase on the release lever.
In addition to more purchase on the magazine would be to shorten the release lever so it takes more effort to make it drop.

Also a google search should get one a fix.
6.5Grendel website may have help there.

I have hunted with my Howa Mini now for several years. Initially I was concerned about the mag release, but I have not had any accidental release of it in my experience. You do need to be aware it is possible depending on how you hold your gun and adjust accordingly.

I have a mini in 6ARC and it shoots good. It doesn't have the characteristic bell at the end of the muzzle so I didn't have to cut and rethread. The metalwork is decent and it is a bargain at the price. I had read before that if you want to make it a great gun be prepared to spend some money and I believe it's true. A good stock and bottom metal would go a long way to make it better. I've wondered what Fisher, God rest him, or Kobe or Hughes could do with one in exhibition walnut. There are a lot of great gun builders that could do a great job. All it takes is money.

There is a used one in my local pawn shop, looks to be taken care of but it’s a pencil pencil barrel. I think my skinny pinky finger is bigger than it is.

Thinking about this, a good machinist could make a release lever with a horizontal toggle that would require the shooter to grab the toggle to release the mag. Just a WAG on my part!
I will try to get a picture of mine soon. The latch is horizontal but it is also metal, aluminum. The factory latch was plastic and had a weak spring plus the location of said latch hit some people’s hand and dropped the magazine. I really don’t have a gripe about the action except the plastic bottom metal but as far as I am concerned do not buy a Boyd’s AT-1 stock. It has sharp corners and just doesn’t feel good. The inletting leaves something to be desired too. The B&C stocks are much better feeling in my opinion. More than likely real soon this whole rifle is going on the chopping block. My AR shoots better in 6.5 G and I don’t like AR’s that much. I haven’t fooled with mine in a couple of years but it would make a great gun for a kid in my opinion.

After loosing a mag and having them fall out several times I shortened my magazine release lever to just below flush with a hacksaw. No more unintended mag drops and it didn't cost anything.

I also did the same to a newer Ruger 10/22 after unintentionally dropping the mag on two separate occasions. When you're following up dogs on varmints you don't need to be thinking about not bumping the stupid mag release. I can't say how pissed when I needed a second shot on a groundhog in a brush pile only to discover my mag was gone.
