Best Powder for 45acp 230 grain hollow point

Do a little research, Massad Ayoob recounted an issue where the person prosecuted had made up a "light load" for a .357 Python. His wife put the gun to her head, he tried to prevent her from shooting herself, Bang!
The prosecutor insisted that there was not enough powder on her for it to have happened that way. Yes, he was charged with murder.
Your story is actually plausible
And I've heard the stories of how a DA will try to make you the defender look like a kill happy nut, IE: if you modify your trigger, it's to kill easier etc etc.
What if that happens to be the gun that was in closest proximity at the time?
However I will state this from personal experience
When I took my CCW course in CALIF!
I brought two pistols for the class
And when qualifications came I asked if I could use my handloads
(This was a sort of test to gauge the reaction)
and this with dozens of other people in the class present to shoot also...
He said "I dont care what you use" He used to be a cop and was then a Bond Agent
Uncontracted civilians are not under the same obligations as for instance a cop.
I asked about the supposed legalities of using handloads
he said "if you are forced to defend yourself with a firearm, especially in your own home it doesn't matter what ammo you use to do the job, just make sure you do the job"
--------------------
Similar to the story of a cop that was involced in a shooting with his AR
When the DA asked how come he shot the guy 30 times?!
The cops reply was "Because that's all the ammo I had"
Done, dismissed

It's a free country, carry what makes you happy.

I do know this, when I took my CCL class, which was taught by an attorney, the shooting portion was conducted with factory ammo. I ask why, and in short order it was explained to me that the last thing you want to defend should you ever have to use your weapon is why you had handloads loaded. Just something to avoid.

Same school of thought from my friend the City Marshall. Never use handloads, you won't have to answer why.

Pretty simple to me, if you can avoid unwanted attention in a court room, why not just use factory ammo.

To be clear it's not the intruder that is the problem, its the District Attorney that uses uses the hand loading to show that you are a crazy, gun happy, trigger happy person trying to load more lethal ammunition. He will use it to sway those 12 people in the jury box. Tie that in with what he finds in your forum post and who knows how he may twist it.
This!!!

Then use your reduced target loads so you can say you WERE trying to hit him “softer”!
I use factory ammo in my carry gun for one reason! They always go boom. No matter how carefully I reload, one in a thousand is a dud.
the DA will twist that. Remember, we're talking about lawyers. Just don't give them an ammo.

not arguing, and I understand.
I'm sure much of it depends on the area and the type of judges there.
Just pointing out there are 2 schools of thought

If you have to draw your gun, in a self-defense situation, then to be justified you have to fire it. As a concealed carry holder, your first obligation is to diffuse and retreat, otherwise you are brandishing a firearm. If the threat to you is such, that you fear great bodily harm, e.g. broken bone, then you have a right to fire. In a situation like that, I wouldn't care what ammunition was in my gun.

Depends on the state. Most states are moving away from "duty to retreat".

What does that have to do with shooting an intruder with a handload???

One reason, I would only use handloads is that when ever I go to the range where people practice, I always pick up duds. These are factory rounds. I don't have misfires with my handloads. I don't need to practice clearing my gun.
I'm really sorry I got dragged down this self-defense rabbit hole, by post #2. The OP asked about the best powder for 45 ACP with a 230 gr. bullet. Period

Yea I read all the stories about the Massad Ayoob and that case. The idea the prosecutor had was since so little GSR on the wife the shoot must have happened from a further distance, The distance the husband was at. How could there be a revolver with one shot gone from the cylinder and the lab not test some of the rest of the ammo and see it was a light load? What about GSR on the husband? There is so much online presents with Ayoob being in court over workers comp fraud and problems with his department I find it hard to decide if he is who he says he is. I wish some one honest would fact check stuff on the net. That said I bought a box of CCI gold dots for the 45 and Hornaday critical duty for the 38s. Both are way hotter than what I would have loaded.

Thanks I'll look into it, I've been loading all 3 powders for a while now I'll chronograph all 3 but if there's a liability I'll keep my magazine for home with a hollow point I'll buy. I think I have to much time on my hands, retirements been good I like to make my own stuff

Unfortunately this is the truth of it especially in full blown communist states like Washington!… once you have defended your life from a lethal threat you then have to defend yourself to stay outta prison. I have been packing a 10mm, just watched a Hickock 45 video that covered that exact content!… the prosecutor will show you was packing a super killer!… why?…and your screwed!

Of the powders you listed I would go with AA#5 and I love how it meters and it shoots well in my 45. I pray you only have to practice with it as I wish for myself but like you I will defend myself, my home or anyone in need if need be
