6 Dasher Vs 6 PPC

I have a Savage Model 12 that has been barreled in 6 Dasher. Now it shoots great and only has about 50 rounds on the barrel. It is a Bartlien barrel and the smith fit the barrel with no savage nut. I bought this rifle to be my entry into benchrest. It has as great BR stock on it and it has been bedded.

My question is should i stick with the dasher or rebarrel it for PPC? Can the dasher be competitive at short range? I have so many books that show the PPC as the dominate cartridge. I want to start with something that I can learn with and grow with.

I run a 6 ARC for my PRS rifle and I have a BUNCH of neck turned PPC brass that I got from some local guys to fire form for 6 ARC, that was before everyone started making brass.

I know I wont be winning any matches any time soon but I am trying to figure out what I should to so I don't waste so much time and money getting started in benchrest as I did getting into PRS.
 
seems you have cartridges that both will work for each respective discipline, but neither is what all the top shooters/winners usually are using. I shoot BR with 6 dasher, and it works, but if I were going to be serious about it I would probably use 6PPC.

I have a 6 Dasher, 6 BR and a 6 ACR PRS rifles. I know gun poor over here lol. I did the "lets try everything" route and it was a costly choice. I am trying to not repeat that again.
 
I know very little about SR benchrest BUT I'm going to give you advice anyway. My advice is coming from the LR benchrest side and it may not translate but here goes. Eventually you are going to find the savage lacking and you will want a custom action/stock etc. If I were you, I'd get my feet wet with the dasher, make some friends and learn all you can. I can almost guarantee one of the guys you shoot with will have a rifle that is for sale that you could possibly get at a discount and have a proper custom actioned 6ppc to shoot the game you have chosen to take up. I would almost say that you need to swap barrels and shoot the arc at SR and the dasher for PRS, it would be closer to the chosen calibers anyway.

1000yd br is not the same as short range br. A well tuned Dasher will not have any chance to beat a well tuned ppc in the short range game and a well tuned ppc absolutely has no chance against a Dasher at 1000yds. Some will probably argue but look at the records. Bullets used for both are of completely different designs. What they both have in common is that the rifles needed to be competitive are not cheap.
 
Post some of your dasher targets. For sure, at 100-300 a well tuned dasher will not out shoot a well tuned ppc at 100. At 200 it probably will not either. At 300, I might take the Dasher over the ppc, depending on conditions.

Twist is the big sore spot between short range,1,2,300 and 600/1k That can't really be overcome or i can't anyway....
13.5 T for ppc short range 68g+- bullet
8T for 6bra long range103-108g bullet
Of course a 308 case is a 308 case put any 6mm bullet in it you want but will it fly right.
 
The standard 6BR is decent for short range BR but will not quite match the 6PPC with all else being equal. The 6Dasher, having even more capacity, is going in the wrong direction. Also, as pointed out, the whole set-up and intent is different. So, you can leave your Dasher set up for long range BR or "F". Then get a 13 or 14 twist barrel in 6BR for short range. The two disciplines are different and require different approaches. There can be some overlap but that will mean some compromise, one way or the other. In general, I think you can base a long range BR rifle on a short range platform with some success but not the other way around. WH
 
Tagging along on this one and will be interested in everyone’s feed back. I am shooting a 6 dasher in 100yd BR as well as 1-300yd shoot for score at our local range. I am having a blast with it and do not expect to many top finishes but I am learning so much about the sport. I shot my first 150 at the last match and that was huge mile stone for me. I am learning and experimenting with so many other aspects of comp shooting such as having your front rest and rear bag seat up properly.
I am learning a ton in reloading on every aspect from MV to neck tension. Get your self some Berger 105’s, 8lb jug of varget and load them 31.5gr and have fun.
For what is worth most of the top finishers at our matches are shooting the 30 BR, it is hard to out score a 30 cal hole with a 6mm.
