Re 6.5 creedmoore weight for target shooting?

Hi All,

Looking into getting a new rifle in 6.5 creedmore, Browning x-bolt target max....

Wondering what people use for weight selection for this caliber for 100 to 200yd target shooting? Maybe a deer one day!

130GR, 140GR ? 140+?

If going to 300 yds, same weight?

I have been using .308s up to this point, thinking want to try something new.

As far as "target shooting" is defined I would choose the 6.5 Creedmoor (and have) for anything steel target as far out as 1200 yards. Bullets in the 140-144 weight class can do that in a nice handled.
As @quest450 suggests, it may not necessarily be the best choice for Bench Rest matches but I find it can turn in some very small groups and more than I would suggest one shoot a 300WSM in 600 yard BR ;).
ADDED:
I have shot enough medium to large sized game with the 6.5CM to know it can pack a punch.
 
My Braked Tikka, 24", T-3 Lite ( Non-Fluted model ) Likes, the 130 gr., ELD-M's clocking,.. 2,830 FPS ( Shoot's in the 3's to, Sub 1/2 MOA with, 43.3 grs "Thrown Chg's" of, StaBall 65 ) and practically NO, Recoil, is GOOD on Steel Plates, out to,.. 800 Yds,.. so Far !
The Horn. 140- 147's are most probably, a "Bit Better",.. IF wanting to, Go Out to,.. 1,000 yds.
Don't Overlook, the Berger 130 or, 140 Hybrid's / OTM's and the fabulous,.. 142 Grain, SMK's

Factory ammo or loading?
 
Love the info...especially the "manbun" tag! Didn't see that coming.

From what I am hearing, reading, 140 gr is the mainstay...

Looking at Hornady reload data, using Varget powder:

140 gr would be in the 2500 fps velocity range

130 gr in the 2700 fps velocity range ....this seems like less drop...but maybe more influenced by wind.

Rangewise...limited to 200 yds locally... 100+ miles to get somewhere having something longer range.
I'm on Long Island NY, so a good ways away from anything with 1000yds, which would be nice to try!

This Browning is 26". fluted stainless barrel, and hawg muzzle brake.

I've been revieiwing Tikka, savage, ruger, begara...kinda leaning to the Browning...

One thing to note: Sent a few questions to browning, sales and tech, and replies came back within an hour!
As opposed to Savage....either e-mail crickets or a reply maybe a week later...forget phone calls.

So, they have that going for them in my opinion.

If this purchase goes through, might try both...130gr, 140gr, and judge then...

I would be doing my own loading...
I would use some factory loads maybe through rifle for first shots....

Plan would be Lapua cases, sierra matchking bullets, varget powder.

I would go the 4350 range of powder for 140 bullets instead of Varget.
 
I am a big fan of Browning X-Bolts. I picked up a Browning Eclipse Target in 6.5 CM some years ago and love it. For a Factory rifle, Browning does a pretty good job. The big challenge in using it as a target rifle, is you will need to replace the barrel at some point and finding someone to work on it may be an issue. But I have and even re-chambered another X-Bolt in a 6 Dasher...so doable.

As was said, Berger 140g Hybrids with H4350 is a great combination to work with.
 
Curious re browning barrel changing:

How long (how many shots) did you go before the barrel needed replacement?

How did you notice it needed replacing?

And as mentioned, H 4350 seems like another good choice I see voiced by others! So that would be part of the recipe for reloads....
 
The good news is that the 6.5CM is not a barrel burner like some other calibers. As to how many rounds depends on what you determine acceptable performance. For me, once I get over 2000 rounds, I will start looking to get another barrel ready. By 2500, it is time to replace it. I have a buddy that went over 4000 rounds but by then the barrel in pretty bad shape.

Alright then there's some Lapua brass for sale in classifieds mostly new, r remaining is 1x fired.
If your intent on using Varget I'd stick with lighter bullets 1 believe there are some 108gr Scenar in the classifieds as well.
I run 123 scenars @2920 & 136L's @2750.
I've personally never run Varget or H4350 in my CM, and I ain't got no bun!
 
For Autoxforfun: So for me, 100 shots at the range for the day, once a month... for 10 months, thats like less than 3 years, then new barrel?!!

Is that typical or is that specific to Browning?

I might not actually go once a month...so maybe 4 years for me...but then new barrel??
Hmmm, or just get a new rifile?

I have some .223's, .308s to also play with...so maybe 5 years??

Never had a barrel replaced.

For the Browing, did you do it? Did you send it back to browning? What kind of cost is that?

Guess I need to look into that a bit...another things I did not consider.
