Unused Firearms -- Keep or Sell?

Since my last thread asking for options/thoughts got deleted, I am going to make this as vague as possible to try to not break rules. I just want others opinions/thoughts that may vary from mine.

Say you have firearms in the safe that see little to no use, say firearms that have no sentimental value to you. Do you keep them for the sake of not getting rid of your collection, or do you occasionally downsize to either make room for something you have been eying or use the funds for other needs?

I’ve only ever sold two guns, one was a semiautomatic 22lr because I wanted a 6 shot 22lr revolver instead and the other was my F-Class rig that I quit using due to life events.

anyways, what do members do? Thoughts, opinions?

I went through the same thing a couple years ago after being involved in some very large collections from estates. How much of this stuff do I really need?

I sold off anything not been shot or used in 10+ years unless it said Colt on it, US Military or a machine gun. Kept the stuff I really like/being hunted with. Quality not quantity.

Dang, you got me thinking my collection is lacking! No machine guns here, haha.

If you have someone to leave them to give them to them now so they can give you a hug and a kiss and say thank you not before your dead! The same goes with money.

I was blessed with only daughters. The oldest doesn’t show any interest in shooting sports….maybe the youngest will surprise me. She is night and day compared to her sister.

Unfortunately, the money, if made, won’t be for new toys nor for my heirs (we have set money aside every month in an account for them since birth). We finished building almost a year ago, money is tight due to economy. We need another load of limestone, multiple loads of good dirt to dress up around house and plant grass, I need more conduit and wire for permanent power to my shop, etc. Fun fun!

I have a bunch of guns I bought or built with the idea that I’d have time “someday” to shoot them. It’s not comforting to realize that someday might not happen and I’m running out of time. I’m going to be thinning the herd, as they say. Quality over quantity is a good thought. I’ll be keeping the good ones. I don’t have kids of my own, but I have a couple good young men I’ve “adopted” and mentor. I’ll split what’s left and give them my guns when the time comes. My wife would sell them for $50/ each, if it were her decision!

Keep or sell and use money to buy more desirable guns. Never sell to be one less gun. Any sold should be replaced. Just the way I see it. With factory pistols and some other guns I try to buy brands and models that hold value or even appreciate in value such as some Colt 1911’s and certain Colt revolvers. If I do have to sell then i wont take a beating and probably come out money ahead in such guns.

I'm a pretty practical sort of guy. If it's something I use regularly, it stays. If I rarely use it, but when I need it it's very helpful, it stays.
If others think it's worth a lot, but it will sit idle at my house, it goes.
If I'm never going to use it, it goes.

The only 'gray' area is, is it something I might use if my current situation changes. Then I might keep it. But. That list has to stay short. I despise clutter. Doesn't do me a bit of good to keep something I can't find because I'm keeping too much other stuff.

And as I get older, I keep my 'projects' list short, too.

Sell. I have a friend who has sooo many that he "finds" ones he has no clue he had or where they came from...

I shoot more then the average person and I HATE having equipment in the back of the safe taking up room and not getting love. I do have a few that don't get shot that have sentimental value but if it's just a gun and I don't shoot it, down the road it goes.

IMHO, YMMV etc.

Oh the decisions! Minty Smith Corona 1903 A3- Sell or Keep?

Most of the guns I own, aren't real high dollar items, and in Oregon we've gotta do a FFL transfer for all face to face sales. Between the hassle and the cost, I just don't feel the need to liquidate my inventory.

I'm kinda waiting for a couple of the grandkids to develop a stable lifestyle -- and if and when that happens, they'll start getting guns.

I don't feel to bad about what I've got. I've got a best bud who has about 35 motorcycles, and his wife gives him the stink eye all the time about it. jd

Have always wanted an ‘03. Got on a M1 kick years ago, have a “few” mix masters that I really enjoy. One is a CMP Field Grade Special with criterion barrel, it goes in the woods with me. It’s a shooter, very accurate.
