Solution to cleanly return powder to large containers

Somehow, I don't think I am the only one that has a hard time returning unused powder back into the 8lb jugs. Somehow emptying my powder hopper, I always seem to spill some.
Tried using a 1lb bottle to empty the hopper, then transferring it to the 8lb. But that turned into another way to spill powder. I also tried using a funnel, but most funnels have too small of an outlet and powder gets hung up. Also, they are not stable enough in the jug mouth and can wobble or fall out.

Wondering through Amazon, I came up with a simple solution. Wish I had done this much earlier. Would have saved a lot of powder and mess cleanups. The concept is to attach a canning funnel to an 8lb powder jug cap that would make returning the powder without spilling a single kernel.

To start, I kept the cap from an old 8lb jug and ordered a funnel with a 1.5" lower section from .

The funnels lower section actually measures 1.543" at the very bottom and 1.555" at the upper. The opening is 5.1".

Using a 1.5" hole saw drill bit I drilled the top of the jug cap out. Finding the center is made easier by the dimple in the cap. With a little sand paper, I cleaned up the hole.

The funnel inserts into the hole and fits very snugly. Not requiring any adhesive. Of course you could use a hot glue gun, but I didn't find it necessary and this way I can easily remove it and use it on other manufacturers jug caps as well.

So to use this, all I have to do is to remove the sealed jug cap and insert the funnel cap. Worked even better than I had hoped.

I know that this is an overly simple fix, but I am very pleased with how it turned out and thought I would share.

I never like the idea of picking the scale up each time to dump it and haveing it level like it was before. I came up with this years ago and it works as designed. No fuss and no mess if you remember to close the valve.

I pour my powder from my powder thrower into 1 pound containers by just wrapping my forefinger and thumb around the spout of the one pounder, and tilting the funnel in. For some reason the kernels just go in the pounder without complaint. If I use a funnel they bounce, stick, go all over.

But your answer is elegant

I’m missing something. I’ve never had any issues pouring powder from any form of dispenser or thrower, into its container. I usually fill a one pounder from an eight, but either way, it just goes right in! Chargemaster, auto trickler v3, manual thrower, still waiting on my ingenuity, we’ll see.

I simply took a empty 1 lb. Accurate bottle and cut the top off:

After pouring powder into it, I'll squeeze it like this and then the powder pours out easily into any bottle with a small opening (like Accurate's 8lb bottles; no spills, no need for a funnel) :) :

I will try this out soon, thanks for the tip!
I think I could see where this would be handy also to pour off a fuller 8# into then use your funnel to fill the thrower and trickler.

lol. Why not just put the entire bottom of the hopper into the powder jug opening and then turn the lock on the hopper and it all spills into the jug. I think this is an overly complicated solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist. What hopper are you using that can’t be easily drained from the bottom??

Because I use a hopper that is attached to a scale to dispense the initial charge then trickle the balance on my Sartorius scale.

This solution may not be the best for everyone. If you like it great, if you don't then ignore it. Just thought I would share my solution.

As for the elegant's, I don't like building junk, I prefer to try and make something I can be proud of.

I've only had this concern with Ramshot's TAC 8. It's got the tiny openning. VV and Hodge are big enough that I'm not bothered.

Mostly, I try to pour only a tad more than I need.

I just make funnels as I need them with some heavier paper, like card stock. You can make the opening as big or small as you need, then tape it when formed.

This gets the coffee from the grinder into the repurposed jelly jar.
