you are right. I did the math: in order to get 2900 in 6.5 PRC you have to have a 28" barrel and push it hard over N570 (I mean 140gr hybrids). With a 28" barrel I can run 140hybrids in 6.5creed at 2820fps over N555. So, yes, the gain is not so huge.

I have built two 6.5 PRC's, the 1st one had a 28" barrel, running 140 Bergers at 3200.

The 2nd one had no problems running 140 Bergers at 3100 in a 24" barrel.

I ended up selling both and decided to stick to my 6.5x47, opposite of what the OP is contemplating.

6.5x47 is like creed in terms of energy down range. why did you take that decision?

My observations in terms of velocity are more consistent with yours. H1000 as well as N565 will make velocities around ~3100 without exceeding book max out of a 24 inch Shilen using the 143 ELDX.

2900 seems low and must be a very mild load.

I built the 1st for playing out to a mile plus.

I built the 2nd for my hunting open field deer hunting in Montana. Of the deer I killed out there, I never shot any beyond 350. I'm confident in the 6.5x47 to 600 if need be, so it got the job. I had already shot 3-4 with it when I grabbed it just for a change of pace.

Exactly, Nosler shows 3113 with the 140 in a 26" tube, Hornady is at 3150 with 140 in 26" too
