Who's got a new truck ?

Can't speak to a new truck, mine is a 2012 Raptor. But, it was a basic truck with only a couple options, and have had near zero issues beyond normal maintenance.

What i do see is more options, more problems. Particularly things like "sunroof".

I've tried to buy used in the past but, they are normally not much cheaper and the loans on new trucks are better.
I went into the bank about halfway through my loan and when they did the loan to value comp, my truck bluebooked for only just about 2k less than I paid.

The price of used trucks, at least where I live, is crazy.
Yeah, used trucks are sky high, but in Texas, dealers have a lot of inventory. People cannot afford 12% interest rates so they are making decent deals on used trucks. I have been told from a few guys recently. I have a hard time paying 55-65 for a full size nice pick up. on the other hand, it is hard to find trucks with fairly low mileage. Bottom line it is hard to get a quality truck at a decent price!

They had better make it really super price cut, before I will pay the prices they want for a new one now days.
I am Just flat out too old to pay 80-100 thousand for a new one.

It is amazing there is anyone in this economy that can pay $100K for pickup truck. The economy here in Oklahoma looks worse than in my lifetime, but every 5th car on the road is massive pickup. I mean, I do have a truck, but it is from before the apocalypse.

There is a certain demographic that must be doing just fine.

I could not afford a new truck. I'll keep my 2005 Chevy single cab, one ton, 8.1 big block, 4X4, heavy duty trailering package, off road package, 6 speed manual with limited slip 410 rear end. Ordered in 2004, out the door for $25,000 . Only problem was the heater started to leak and it cost over $1000 labour to remove the steering wheel and dashboard to get to the heater to replace it. I'm glad it has roll up windows.

I’m sure the majority just get a payment figured out that the salesman makes them think is doable,

Dodge and Ram is now like saying Ford and Chev. Rams are Fiat's. I have had many Dodge/Cummins late 80's -2007.5 and if you dont mind broken plastics and paint that looks like eucalyptus bark then they will roll forever if you keep fluids fresh, esp the trans and especially dont overheat it.
I am rv'ing right now with 2014 170k mile Ram 1/2 ton diesel and camp trailer. A guy ( auto dealer) pulled into slot next to me with a 2022 1/2 ton chev diesel and we got to comparing. The Chev diesel was some euro engine out of a delivery truck where the truck cab tilts forward to access the engine. SO the engine in the Chev was backwards! To do any work to it need to drop engine and slide it reawards. Also he had 40k on his truck and burned a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Normal.
My Italian 3L diesel has never missed a lick and zero oil burn. But I will have to admit it has been stripped of all emissions and with engone and trans tune since new.

If I had to do it again, for a tow rig, I would find a cherry 07 GM 2500 with the 8.1L Vortec and call it good. Best v8 workhorse ever built. 12 mpg empty or pulling a 5'er. Gas is cheaper than diesel so comparative mpg towing would be like 15mpg, or whatever, to diesel. Repairs/maintenance/problems is a fraction of new diesels.
Basically comes down to which ever feels better to drive.

PSA for those contemplating buying a new truck.

The old expression "pig in a poke" comes to mind.

Does anyone remember the panic over AR-15s? During the Obama administration? When people were paying $3,000 for $300 ar15s? I remember.

All depends on how many years you wanna pay for it…lol
A lot of people don’t worry about the total price. Just the payment amount. And now you can finance for 7-8 years. Rediculous!

My 08 Sierra has 190k in it and I would drive it anywhere. And will until it quits. Then I will find another 8-10yo truck with 60-70k on it and then drive it for 10years or so. I absolutely refuse to pay today’s price for a truck to drive back and forth to work. So I can work to pay for my ride to work…lol

On a brighter note, a barrel from Shilen just showed up 10 minutes ago just in time for me to wrap it and put my name on it…

I think that it is more likely younger people that were never taught to manage money.

There is a huge problem in this country (probably everywhere in the developed world) of younger people not understanding debt and that, just because you can scrape up a payment, that doesn't mean you can afford to buy it.

I live in the cheapest house in a relatively wealthy area. There are a ton of 20 somethings that buy a $800,000 house at 7% and two fancy vehicles as soon as they get their first real job. I have also seen many of these people getting foreclosed on when a small unexpected expense causes there house of cards to fall.

My folks grew up in the depression and, almost literally, an understanding of living within your means, was beaten into me.

An $80K pickup financed at 6 percent for 7 years is a payment of

$1,168.68

(that is more than my mortgage by quite a bit and my house 3000 sq foot two story in a nice neighborhood).

The total paid for the vehicle is

$98,169.49

That is

$18,169.49 In interest.

The interest is about the same that I paid for my brand new Dodge Ram Quad Cab Texas Special in 2002.

I don't think too many Joe Sixpacks are buying 80k trucks. A lot are fleet sales and to individual business people that can write off their cost. Many are leased, thus lowering the payments. In the luxury market, the majority are leased.
