Who's got a new truck ?

Guess I’m the last one with a vehicle from the 90’s? 99 ram half ton 4x4. Not much power, crappy fuel mileage but a damned reliable truck if nothing else! Runs drives great just can’t keep up with the body rust and decay. Won’t pass inspection anymore which is a damned shame. Need something new but nothing built today will last over 20 years ;(

Sorry your not the only one. As my post earlier 98 diesel sub 3/4ton 53k miles, 95 diesel sub 3/4 ton 115k miles, 03 sub 1/2 ton 5.3 251k miles, 05 sub 3/4ton 6 liter 248k miles. All have been pretty reliable problem free trucks.

Approaching 30 years wrenching on junk professionally, I've come to the conclusion that any Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep or however they identify, are second rate. Definitely not discount! However, I rate them above Ford. Whichever the op chose, I hope he doesn't extend thenoil change interval.
so if you needed a 'new' 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup, not new but used ie 2014>, what flavor would you pick?

Last two have been Dodge Ram diesels. A new 2016 2500 Cummins and the last a year old (2022) 1500 eco-diesel (GEN 3) with 25,000 miles. Still have the eco-diesel (46,000 miles). No problems with either one. The eco-diesel averages 31 mpg on the road trips and 23.5 mpg in town. I really like it! Bummer that Ram quit making that engine!

what are some good years for 1/2 ton GM trucks? I cannot stand the newer ones.
I don't know as I was always a ford guy through the '79s. Although I did have an '85 3/4ton suburban 4spd with a 350, that was really reliable. I think any of those old K's are a good bet but like the old fords they are costly to get into so a person needs to have cash. Still $30-60k that's been mostly gone through and something any of us can work on is feeling better than $65-100k for a new one that will likely cost twice that much in maintenance and repairs over its life.

watch what runs through bringatrailer . com for a while, you can get e-mail alerts for year ranges so it's the easy button. After a while you'll start to recognize your local rebuilders and who's putting out stuff you might be interested in as well as who can be trusted vs just some dude selling something.

one range they have for c/k https://bringatrailer.com/chevrolet/ck-1973-1991/
you can also scroll down and see previous sales so a person can get a good idea of what's going through and sale prices from that. A full frame up is costly, but you're getting a new/old rig. There's plenty that were just found and fixed a bit so a person can do whatever they like to those, soup to nuts.

If I was towing big/heavy loads though, it would be one of the new rigs 3500 size. Just too many benefits from the advancements.

My half-ton is a 1981 Dodge Prospector with about 37,000 miles on it. Not perfect, but it has the potential to be so. The 2017 3500 doesn't totally suck, but problems can be spendy if they occur. A faulty dimmer switch cost me 467 dollars. The same issue on the '81? $12.95. The 81 was built before we needed a computer to turn on the headlights. Hand crank rolls the window up and down. The gears are shifted manually; so is the transfer case. That's as it should be. WH

I wouldn't buy anything car/truck newer than 2019 with all the bs after that.
Exactly my train of thought, I bought this 2019 a couple weeks ago with 57K on the clock.

Blew my wad on new tires & wheels too:

I would like to buy something new but, it''s against my religion. I have always bought vehicles and kept them for at least 12-13 years. Luckily, I have never had any real problems with any vehicle.

My newest truck is a 2015 Ram 1500. I bought a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty from Ram but, from a different dealer, just before the factory warranty ran out. I fluid film it every few years to keep the undercarriage in good shape and I will probably keep it for another 5 years at least.

I am not impressed by any new vehicle and they're seemingly continuing the pattern of decreasing quality and increasing price for the foreseeable future.

I am not sure what I will do when I need a new one...the future offerings seem pretty bleak.

I'm not interested in a debate, I've got a fair amount of experience myself

That's got....Let's go play.,written all over it.
Agreed. I hunted for the right 18 or 19 Silverado when this one finally popped up.

Checked all the boxes, with the tires & wheels putting the cherry on top.

I’m satisfied with Ford’s. Keep your foot out of most any brand and that will eliminate most problems.
I agree with what you are saying but they gave that truck x/horsepower and if for what ever reason I need x/horsepower I should be able to use it without fear of ruining my vehicle. Now if you need x/horsepower all the time then you should by a truck with 2x/horsepower just so your not over working the truck on a constant basis. I guess what I'm saying is you got to be smart about what you are doing. 3 of my subs get used when I need everything it has I use it but I don't need all of it very often and I believe that why they have held up as well as they have. Used but not abused!
