Lever plunger spring

Have a Marlin 336 lever action trouble. Lever does not want to stay closed very well. Changed the
lever plunger spring & it does no good, still the same. It's clean, there's no grease or grime interfering
with it. Any suggestions?

My memory is old, and I don't have one to look at, but I think if I remember right, that is part of the safety system. You have to hold the lever closed to pull the trigger. With no pressure on the lever, it drops down slightly and is not all the way closed.

Sometimes the plunger needs a bit of file work to fully engage. There could also be wear on the roll pin that it engages, ahead of the trigger.

The plunger seems to be working fine. I wonder if it's a worn roll pin. Is it possible to change
this pin?

Thanks for the info. I was going to change the plunger also but looks like they
are all out of stock.
You should be able to see if the pin is worn with the lever open. Reshaping the plunger is an easy job if you're handy with a file.

You're welcome to send me the trigger plate and lever if you're not comfortable with doing it.

Never thought about reshaping the plunger with a file, & I'll get a better light to see
if the pin looks worn. Thank you for the offer. I sure will keep you in mind.

Have you cleaned it real well? If old oil get's cacked up in there it will make the mechanism malfunction. I would tape up the action and remove the stock and clean it with solvent.

Sometimes lever itself gets "sprung" slightly bent toward action. This prohibits the lever from closing completely thus not allowing full engagement of plunger in retaining notch. Also doesn't allow 100% lock up. Usually happens after a trip to the floor or if action became jammed and someone tried to muscle the lever closed.

I put a stronger plunger spring in. That did the trick. Stock one I bought wasn't strong enough.
Thanks guys, for all the help.
