First Suppressors!!

One of my customers got on to me because I had never purchased a suppressor. After sitting next to guys at the range with vans on their rifles, and realizing how quiet they were, I decided I would at some point have to endure the process and "tax" and get one.

I bought two for Lauren and I to use.

Two days!!!

I first used a suppressor in South Africa in 2017, came home and ordered a couple, now I have them on a good number of centerfire rifles and pistols, rimfire too. So much easier on the ears and the way they change recoil is welcome too. My only complaint is that they make a rifle barrel very long, which is a good excuse to have some short barreled rifles built.

Anybody that hasn’t tried one might really enjoy them if they gave it a try.

I have a full auto rated one , use that one when shooting prairie dogs. Even at 100 yards with a 22-250 other adult pd sit look where one just disappeared from, as long as chunks don't hit them.

Tolerance stacking is the main reason. A lot of guys have alignment issues and when they send the can back to SiCo they tell them it’s the mount causing the issue. Direct thread is always best. If you use an ASR brake or QD mount you MUST verify with an alignment rod. I See a lot of guys posting online that their accuracy went to crap when using the suppressor and when they take the asr mount off, and direct thread it to the barrel, the accuracy comes back.

In the picture below you should notice the two toothed tabs. The outside collar is eccentric, so when you turn it the collar exerts tension on the two tabs pressing them into the toothed ring on the outside of the flash hider. Notice how the tabs are not solid so they act as a spring. Over time the tab bends down and does not exert enough (or any) inward pressure to grip the suppressor.

I've never had any problems with accuracy with the quick attach. I have heard all the stories about quick attach, but I often used that suppressor on various guns, so it is a bonus.

What happens? I climbed into a deer stand and had some does come out and I was going to try to get all three. First shot is loud and pretty stout recoil for 5.56. I looked up and the suppressor was gone. It had not tightened on the flash hider and the suppressor drooped enough so that the bullet punched through the suppressor end cap. Evidently the revs of the bullet spun it off the gun - no baffle strike. I emailed Silencerco and they told me to stick a screw driver in the tab and bend them back out. They said they would send a new endcap, but never did. And never responded to my emails asking for the cap.

Your going to love your new suppressors. I used to poo poo the Idea on high vel. rifles. My line of thinking was your going to get a supersonic crack anyway. Well that was then. I love my suppressors. I wear hearing aids from living a Loud Life. The noise and muzzle blast reduction is very welcome. I also like the way recoil impulse is altered reducing perceived recoil. I started out with a suppressor on a Rem Sendero 26" 7mm Rem Mag. Too long for my kind of hunting. (OK on the bench) I mostly hunt with an 18".308 or a 20"7mm PRC now and feel the velocity reduction is worth it. Also Interesting is how much some rifles change point of impact.
