Scope windage adjustment

Just a question and I hope not a dumb one . Haven’t ever thought about it much and when I do I can’t seem to find a fast answer. Moa scope example using 1/4” per click at 100yds. If your windage is off 1” at 200 yards would it be 4, clicks or just 2 clicks. I know and understand elevation didn’t know if windage worked the same way. I usually hold my windage instead of dial. One minute I think it should take 4 clicks and the next I think no dummy it’s double the distance so it should take half the clicks which is correct.

Double the distance, double the correction. 100yd = .25", 200yrd = .50", 1000yrd = 2.50" Don't overthink it.

Right. Just to confirm, those distances in inches are all [almost] exactly the same in MOA.

From NSSF: Divide the distance (in yards) you are shooting by 100 and you will know how big 1 MOA is in inches. For example, imagine you are now shooting at 250 yards. 250 / 100 = 2.5. So, 1 MOA at 250 yards is 2.5″

A click that gives you 1/4” @ 100 will give you 1/2 at 200,3/4 at 300 and an inch at 400, windage or elevation.

Your best bet would be to forget inches and stay angular and use the reticle like a ruler to tell you how much to hold or dial.

I have both. Wanted to try a mil scope I have a few of each now. Using them to measure they work the same

oh allright. .01mil = .36 inch at 100 yds. So 3 clicks per 1MoA is near enough. I do own a couple. One is a Leica Magnus 4-16 hunting scope. Better not get too far away though - terrible amount of elevation - Wont even zero at 100 yds with a 20 MoA rail! , but adequate for 400yd deer. ( and the best glass...). The other is a 6.5-20 Loopy. Not sure why I bought it. Pretty little scope.

That's your problem. You are converting an angular to a linear and back to an angular and then converting that angular back to the original angular. No wonder your brain seized up. LOL

Friday I saw a couple friends out in their bean stubble field sighting in shotguns(sabots) at 100 yards. I drove out just as one took a second shot. 1st,2nd were 5" low,4 right touching. He said good enough, same as last year "I know where to hold". I asked how far is your typical shot(they have raised permanent blinds) he told me 87 yards to the trail. I said than your " hold changes because of angle of minute ". He had a confused face, I suggested that " under those Leupold caps there were screws and we could eliminate the need to remember where to hold the crosshairs between 50 and 100 yards(trying to keep things simple for him). Off the caps came, I grabbed a driver bit for the friction type turret screw. Made both for him, next 2 in the 2" bullseye he had on the box. He shot a 10 pt buck Saturday, said the he put the crosshair right behind the shoulder. His dad,uncle's and cousins said we can't believe he hit a deer. His dad told told the others Mike(me) stopped and helped him. His dad told me the others said Mike helped us with our slug guns. Once a year shooters, I keep telling them get a scoped .22 and have family contests for practice.

Yes he did when he said "3 clicks per 1MoA is near enough" as he would have to do this to get his final number.

That is close but the more you dial the more you will be off. Best to forget any linear and just use the angular you use in the scope.

Well, we have drifted off to the side with MIL
I have a Mil scope, wife has a (1/8) MOA scope.
WE set up @ 100 yards (where wind has little effect) to find a No-Wind zero.
Using hold off or dial to the day's average wind at longer range (like 600yds).
The target gives feedback, usually in MOA.
Having a good zero allows you to return or be close at various ranges.
Wife set zero @ 100, over a couple trips, then 300, 600 then back to 100 to check the scope.
Looks like she was off about 1/8 MOA (or she pulled a shot)

Reason I started this little thread is I was wondering how a scope really worked. If in a controlled environment or tunnel or zero wind at all, if I sighted in a rifle and let’s just say I zeroed it 1” to the right at 100 yards. It should still be to the right 1” at 200 and 1” right at 300 and so on. Elevation I understand how it works was just curious about the windage. I guess if wind was involved and it drifted my bullet 1” right at 400 then yes 1 click left should be back on target

Nope.
If you were 1" LOW at 100yds, and 1" Right at 100yds, you would be 4" low (plus drop) and 4" right (no wind) at 400.
Find a no-wind zero, check often.

You wind comment is correct. Drift 1" right @ 400 is 1/4MOA (one click).

As Rocketvapor mentioned, if it's 1" right at 100 yards, it will be 2" right at 200 and 3" right at 300 - with 0.0 wind.

Don’t forget to check tightness of screw(s) on the windage drum either.
