Aeromatch Bullets for high volume shooters

Those pictures illustrate just a plain striking resemblance. The 175, there in the first conversations of my personal doorway into the accuracy rifle arena is eerie.

This is a first. Yes there has been a “180” 7mm by Red, Blue, Yellow and Green. But we could identify their maker from a glance across the room, that’s how different they were.

There has never been a direct duplication of a bullet made by a competing maker, to my knowledge, before.

The dimensions and weights will line up. External ballistics lines up. The barrel won’t know the difference and neither will the air. What will the target say?

This is one gutsy move. Hornady is tipping the hat to the success of these particular designs by tooling up to clone them. There is no ego in this step. This is one chef choosing to analyze every aspect of another’s entree, that customers have said is VERY good. “That” side of this is humbling if anything, and risky, it is also putting its manufacturing under a microscope for direct unabashed comparisons.

It’s gutsy as hell. Yes, Hornady can internally know before we do, how close they are, with 50 gallon drums full of colored boxes, and burned out barrels galore strewn around, but something tells me they won’t go as overboard as even some of us mere customers would. We are all going to find out together.

This is monumental. We have never truly known if certain Bergers or Sierras are made extremely well, or are a just a great design. We are about to find out what is part of the design’s DNA, versus the bullet’s “upbringing” in head to head matchups.

None of us, if we are being honest, like every bullet our favorite manufacturer makes. We will hard pass on some or many of them. So, no, we DO NOT think any particular “color” is infallible, and this is “game on”.

I had a conversation some years back with CCI when the primer shortage began. They told me they were making primers 24/7. When I asked if they were going to expand production capabilities the answer was no, that they felt it was a short term shortage. This has spawned opportunities for other companies to start up. Those that dont grow will get left behind. Hornady has a history of copying others products and their marketing people can sell anything to anyone. They took a page out of the chinese playbook

Regardless of how we feel about this, one way or the other, Hornady will have to seriously consider their manufacturing techniques to get up to par with Berger.

This will be an interesting series of events and product releases.
I share the same feelings. It seems great and all for Hornady if they can sell Hybrids that physically duplicate Berger’s for less money, but if they don’t shoot consistently as good as Berger’s then I don’t see them doing anything special. We can already buy other “Match grade” bullets from multiple manufacturers that have similar BCs to the Hybrids. It’s not just the design of the bullet, it’s the consistency and the tolerances to which they’re held during manufacturing.

Agreed IF their goal is to compete for the top podium step. It’s very possible, even likely, that that isn’t their ultimate goal. From a business perspective, there’s legions of shooters that want better accuracy than what’s commonly available off the shelf but aren’t participating in elite level competition. They’re happy to get something better than what they had before (even if it’s not “the best”) and save 20%
