Hornady 4DOF issues

Yeah, I can't get into the app unless there is internet connection. However, it will also not show me the favorites if I am not logged in. Can you see your configured rifles under favorites and edit the rifle info when you are not logged in?

As far as I can see, your favorites are stored in your account.. i.e. on Hornady’s server and not on the device. I can’t save any favorites if I am not logged in.

Wifi has nothing to do with it. Your cellular network is still active when you are in airplane mode. Even though the claim is that the radios are shut down, that is not true. Bring up google maps while you are airplane mode. Now pull your sim cad and try it again.

Not my understanding but even with no signal it still works for me. Have a few ranges i shoot matches at that I have no signal and it works fine.

Baring any input, I'll provide mine. If you think about using the Hornady app, think twice and try something else first. The problems I've experienced over roughly a 2 years of use are:

1) It throws exceptions when you get to the favorites page. Was happening almost every time. Less so now but I'm sure the bug is still there lurking.
2) In the past I have been able to use by hitting the continue without account. No more. It will let you in but you cannot access your favorites.
3) if you hit continue without specifying your email address it throws an exception: Error Exception of type Hornady.Poco.Exceptions. HornadyException. How useful.
4) If you specify your email address, it forces you to enter your password and hit the login button. You can then see your favorites but often times the buttons appear disabled.
5) if you happen to get into Edit Rifle info (earlier today none of the buttons were working and tonight they are) just to check your settings, you cannot just back out. You are forced to save even though you have made no changes.
6) Sometimes when I'm in a location where I have limited cell service (like Deep Creek Montana) I cannot even bring the app up. In spite of the claim that it can be used offline, that has not been my experience. No network, no working app.

Having spent over 40 years as a software engineer I'm appalled at the problems with this app. Strelok worked so well for so long that dealing with this is aggravating. You wonder about the QA they go through with it. Seems to me that they are more interested in collecting personal information for the purpose of targeted advertising than they are having a working app.

If you’re in an area with little cel phone coverage quickly just put your phone in air plane mode to bring up the app. It will come right up.

When your are in air plane mode you are 100% not transmitting or receiving cellular data. You can still however receive GPS signal. Those 2 things are not the same.
At matches I use 4DOF on air plane mode a lot being in the mountain area and central matches. Then I use it also while hunting in the mountains while also using OnX hunting; all while being in air plane mode

I'm glad it works for you. It does not work for me. Try an experiment, logout of the app. Pull your sim card then open up the app. Try to log in and no joy. Now go in without account and try to view you favorites.

I am not signed in. That’s what I am telling you. I go in without an account and have a list of favorites. Not sure why you can’t.

I'm going to cut over to something less buggy. I'm evaluating the Lapua ballistics calculator as an alternative. It's looking pretty nice so far.

No idea then. I know what I do and can do on my phone and no issues getting favorites to pop up when continuing as a guest.

I wasn’t logged into to my account for the longest time. All your data should be stored in the phone and it only syncs with Hornady servers as a back up. Try deleting the app and redownloading it. A clean install might help.

I had a 4DOF Kestrel a couple years ago. In the beginning it worked fine with my Android phone. Then the app did an update and it never worked right again. I made some calls at the time and it was a known issue. I sold the 4DOF and went back to my 5700 Elite.

The people I know successfully using the 4DOF Kestrel and their phone are all using iPhones. Everyone I know who was an Android user has had issues and gone back to the 5700 Elite and AB Software.

It just gives the bullet direction. Not really a big deal for most who are not worrying about coriolis effect when taking very long shots.

I will delete the app but I won't reinstall it. Evaluating the alternatives now. Lapua looks pretty good so far. Once I get the data associated with all of my "favorites" (or rifles as we call them in the firearms world) brought over to an app of choice I can purge it from my phone. I've worked with too many buggy apps over the years to suffer the nuances of yet another one. If you like it, keep it. I miss Strelok but I'm sure there is something almost as good out there. This Hornady app is not it.

The interface sucks. I thought I would enter my rifle info from strelok, got annoyed and deleted ot pronto lol. Rather pay for AB.
