Hornady 4DOF issues

I jump into 4 DOF, select a rifle and try to edit rifle info. Buttons do not work on the app page where the rifle ballistics are shown. The slider for distance moves but the ability to enter the distance via text input no longer works. The only thing you can do is left swipe to return to the rifle selection page. At one point I tried to test all the buttons and the app started flashing and trying to sell me a range card. When I'm out of cell range this app has never worked for me. Phone is a Pixel 7.

Anyone else having these kinds of troubles with this app?

Baring any input, I'll provide mine. If you think about using the Hornady app, think twice and try something else first. The problems I've experienced over roughly a 2 years of use are:

1) It throws exceptions when you get to the favorites page. Was happening almost every time. Less so now but I'm sure the bug is still there lurking.
2) In the past I have been able to use by hitting the continue without account. No more. It will let you in but you cannot access your favorites.
3) if you hit continue without specifying your email address it throws an exception: Error Exception of type Hornady.Poco.Exceptions. HornadyException. How useful.
4) If you specify your email address, it forces you to enter your password and hit the login button. You can then see your favorites but often times the buttons appear disabled.
5) if you happen to get into Edit Rifle info (earlier today none of the buttons were working and tonight they are) just to check your settings, you cannot just back out. You are forced to save even though you have made no changes.
6) Sometimes when I'm in a location where I have limited cell service (like Deep Creek Montana) I cannot even bring the app up. In spite of the claim that it can be used offline, that has not been my experience. No network, no working app.

Having spent over 40 years as a software engineer I'm appalled at the problems with this app. Strelok worked so well for so long that dealing with this is aggravating. You wonder about the QA they go through with it. Seems to me that they are more interested in collecting personal information for the purpose of targeted advertising than they are having a working app.

Austin Orgain last I heard was using a Kestrel for atmospherics and the 4 dof for the firing solution because of the simplicity to enter data.

As one of the most successful pro level PRS shooters it's been good enough for him to win a hell of a lot of PRS pro level matches.

I use it also and have not had any problems

Having been barely able to work a laptop my adult life I have no problem using 4DOF. LOL None of the issues you describe at all. I can open it without signing in, as that is how I use it all the time, and use it with no cell service at matches.

Saving with no changes is the same as backing out. You just hit the save button. Not a big deal really is it?

Sounds like it might be a phone issue. Have you deleted 4DOF and reinstalled it?

I have never been able to get into the app when out of cell service. It just hangs like it is trying to connect. I'm on a Google Pixel 7. Android in other words. What operating system are you using it on?

As far as not a big deal, excuses can made for any UI anomaly but I'm annoyed by UI's that attempt to redefine a norm or worse yet not coding to a norm. To me is looks like an amateur job.

I've used it as well at a lot of locations. Most of the time it works (unless out of cell service or having limited cell service). The last couple of days it has not been working then all of a sudden it was working again. Almost as if they had a problem at the server used for the login.

Since you like the app, what happens when you logout then close the app down, then bring the app up and continue without logging in. Can you see your favorites?

There's just far better programs out there and yes most are not free... I have tryed the Hornady app and gave up on it before I ever got off the couch... But that's just me I don't need any more issues than I already have trying to make things work which are supposed to make my life easier...

I'm not sure I'm logging out I guess, it just works for me anytime I've opened it.

I am using an older Apple phone.

Guess I am joyfully ignorant to coding so it's fine with me how it works. LOL

I tried this for the first time and it worked perfectly for me. iPhone SE 3. I was using it without logging in.
You can't get into the app if there's no internet connection.
However, if you are already in the app (while there's internet), and then you lose the net connection, the DOF calculator works fine.

Yeah, I can't get into the app unless there is internet connection. However, it will also not show me the favorites if I am not logged in. Can you see your configured rifles under favorites and edit the rifle info when you are not logged in?

Yes you can. I have done it a bunch of times and just tested it by putting phone in airplane and shutting off wifi. Got right in and went to my favorites without a problem.
Wifi has nothing to do with it. Your cellular network is still active when you are in airplane mode. Even though the claim is that the radios are shut down, that is not true. Bring up google maps while you are airplane mode. Now pull your sim cad and try it again.

Actually that’s not exactly accurate. In airport mode, your cellular data connection is indeed down. Google maps (and specifically google maps) work to a certain extent because GPS is still on. Also, google maps cache map data offline. A combination of these two make it work. It won’t receive any map updates though and if you try to get directions to places that haven’t been cached, they won’t work either.
Put your phone in airport mode, Wifi off and try to load a new site, it won’t work.
