223AI on a CZ527

I have a CZ varmint Kev 223. I have a 1-9 barrel for it that I'm trying to decide if I want to just do another 18" 223 or if i want to do an AI. I have a 18" 22GT so it's not like I "need" it to be a shorty. So I've been tossing around the idea of doing a 20-24" AI instead just for ranch purposes and some fun lengthy plinkin. It will have a can on the end of it. So I guess what my real question is, where is the point of diminishing return on bbl length for the AI?

I don't have to go real short but for my purposes, the shorter I can go, the better.

Plan is 73 Bergers and 55 SBK's. Possibly 64 TGK's. I really like the 73 Bergers for a more all round the ranch type bullet. It knocks down everything pretty well and is very accurate. Coyotes, does, pics, etc.

I'm sure you know this but that's a CZ 527 (centerfire) not a 457 which like Hotshot already mentioned is a rimfire.

Building that on a CZ 527, and, using longer heavier bullets is going to handicap you a little because you'll be limited by the magazine length. Have you given any thought to having it chambered in 22 Nosler? It doesn't get talked about a whole lot but if you were looking for more performance then a 223 will offer I'd take a look at the 22 Nosler, especially, in something like a CZ 527 that has a limited OAL.

The 22 Nosler right out of the bag has more case capacity then the 223AI but loaded with longer heavier bullets in rifles with more limited OAL like a 527 the 22 Nosler will result in having quite a bit more useable case capacity. Certainly nothing wrong with a 223AI, I have one, but in a CZ 527 I'd seriously consider the 22 Nosler over it.

Also, good looking dog, Border Collie not an Aussie, yes? Either way they're both awesome dogs!

Yeah, the OAL was my concern. I shoot 73 Bergers out of it now so I figured it would only gain speed. I have a 22N in an AR. Might be something to seriously consider.

That’s Josey Wales. Colliest lookin Aussie to exist haha. He’s a hand for sure. Thank you!

Wasn't sure if it was an Aussie or merle Border Collie either way they are both amazingly smart and incredible dogs. My Aussie (Kodiak) is a tri he's right at 18 mnths old and has been an awesome doggie.

If you already have a 22 Nos then you're already setup for one and I'd skip past the 223ai idea.

Just got another one. Blue Merle named Trooper. He’s 14 weeks. I never thought I’d have another that would live up to Josey, and I’m not saying Trooper will, but he’s gonna be a damn fine one.

Yeah. I actually know a guy with a 527 22N. I’ll pick his brain. Thanks!

The data I have on one I built a customer a few months back on a Rem 700 action-
22” Kreiger M24 8 twist barrel,69 gr sierra at 3140 FPS with some variety of shooter world powder. I havent visited with him in a while, he was under 100 shots when he told me this.

After some brain piking on the 22N, I think that will be a lot more work than what I'm wanting to put in to this rig. May just deal with the shorter OAL and do the AI. Either way it'll yield higher velocity than a standard and be a little different. May go a little lighter in the bullet dept.

I don't have a 22 Nos nor have I ever looked into building one on a CZ 527 but I am curious, what did you come up with that would make a 22 Nosler on a 527 a lot more work?

Mostly the action work. Opening it up and what not.
