"new" ripoff trimmer from Hornady

this is a flat out design copy, nothing nuanced about it
Soon to be offered by Frankford Arsenal (Chinesium) for 1/2 Hornady 's price.
There are three possibilities: Henderson doesn’t have a patent that applies, Hornady made something different, or Hornady is betting that their legal costs will be paid for with profit.

Unfortunately patent law is a mess anymore. Truly unique and new designs are the exception in patent law not the norm. I was recently looking at patents for work and someone patented very basic math that sort of describes the tubercles that are on the leading edge of a humpback whale fin. The patent holder doesn’t make any product with tubercled fins and I’m sure they’re just out to harvest settlement money from the countless companies who have reason to improve the efficiency of their airfoils and hydrofoils. I feel for the inventors who get ripped off and can’t afford to defend their patent in the legal morass.
If those tubercles can be tied to the patent, it would nullify its effectiveness as something which occurs naturally.
I had a guy copy my 3 inch benchrest bag rider. An exact copy. And he started selling them in eBay. Funny thing is my part was BANNED from eBay as being an "assault rifle part".

Time marches on.

I mean I bet that guy that invented the two wheel bicycle was pissed that his design became what we call a "bicycle", and everyone copied it. Or not.

It is what it is. 30 years in the engineering design game taught me that everyone copied everyone.
I wrote a patent for my employer back in the '90s. In the back and forth clarification refinements between the USPTO and our patent attorney, and me, my employer abandoned the application.
About ten years ago, I came across a patent for that same technology, from about the time my patent would have issued, with virtually the exact same text. I thought it suspect to say the least.

If the firm that originally designed this has a patent, they can sue Hornady. That is how the system works. You can even protect your designs by putting a "Pat. Pending" notice on it while you pursue your patent protection.

i'm sure that hornady's legal team made sure they were in no violation of anything here.

it's the morality of the situation that does it for me. I hate to see a big company walk on and make profit off a small guys original idea.

My reloading bench is comprised of mostly all area 419 gear, autotricklers, henderson, annealing made perfect equipment, primal rights, short action customs, 21st century. all companies who actually push innovation and don't steal others designs.

i thought hornady stood for innovation but i was clearly wrong. if anyone wants some 225 eldm's, 285 eldm, 300 atips, or 53 vmax for a good price i'll make you a fantastic deal

I believe the patent process is a total joke. We purchase goods from companies that meet our needs. In a purely capitalist system there would be no barriers to entry. The market decides the price and if another competitor can make it for less and it lasts to your likening then you purchase it.

If the henderson trimmer is superior it will still sell just fine. Lets not forget you will be purchasing a “Hornady” product and that has a reputation to its own. If you want a better design with better support and service you will pay more for a quality product.

guess i'm the problem :( sorry for sticking up for the small guys
This makes me smile!…. I’ve tried my best to rile ya with zero success but Hornaday got the job done!…. I’ve bitched about there junk for years and every time I do I get flamed for it!… I think once you stood up for them while I was bitching…… I’m happy you have joined the Hornaday haters Bwahaha!…. Have the best rest of your day buddy.

Not being intimately familiar with either unit, do they differ in the datum surface used for controlling length? I thought the Henderson used the case shoulder. It appears the Hornady uses the case end face.

Hmmm??? "A purely capitalist system". . . like where China can reverse engineer products, produce and sell cheaper knockoffs, and that's OK? o_O

Capitalist... Such a misunderstood word.
Henry Ford said he was not a capitalist, he said he was an industrialist. Capitalist are bankers. They don't "make" anything.

You might have just identified the problem.

You're thinking of Giraud. The Henderson uses OAL; case head to cutter if you will. It appears that Hornady uses a mic to control it whereas Henderson uses a hard stop on a bolt. Henderson had said about six months ago he was developing a micrometer adjustable version of his trimmer.
