Fellas, It is our organization.
I have been a life member for over thirty years. In that time I saw what the NRA descended into. My first clue was how the NRA didn't stand at all against the Brady Bill. Then gave only lip service to trying to stop the "assault weapons" ban. They never held anyone's feet to the fire. When Congress changed hands (1994) back to significant Republican control, the NRA's membership mushroomed. The organization had a chance then to push the repeal the "assault weapons" ban, and never lifted a finger.
I felt angry and betrayed as many members did. My close friend said the NRA stood for "Not Relevant Anymore". I did as some of you have said with the fund raising mailings. In the late 1990s I sent a letter back to them (several times) in their own postage paid envelope, which said basically, "When the NRA causes the AWB to be repealed, gets the Brady Law repealed, Advocates for the repeal of the GCA and the NFA, I will consider sending more money. As of now, any funds I care to donate will go to GOA or other organizations." The mailings stopped.
As I said above, it is our organization. The question was, how do we bring back formal competitive shooting?
Local club affiliations?
Yes.
Heavily advertise and support the National Matches?
Yes.
Get affiliated with other clubs which might not be oriented toward shooting, but the members cross over significantly, such as 4H?
Yes.
The NRA MUST also embrace action shooting sports such as USPSA, PRS, Machine Gun shoots, Biathlons (how about PRS on Skis?) etc...
When it is time to fight harmful legislation, the NRA MUST fight tooth and nail, and NEVER compromise!
That means no deal cutting.
That means no selective support or non-opposition to politicians in the enemy camp. They are either 2A supporters, and I mean purists, or they are not.
No more African Safaris at membership expense. Focus on the mission and the mission only.
If the NRA completely cleans house now, and focusses on its two core missions, members will come back and local clubs affiliations will increase. Support for competitive shooting across all disciplines will blossom.
Just my two cents.
