7 WSM woes

For some reason I try to be different. When I shoot in airgun competitions, I always went against the norm. I used crickets, edgun morana, and looking at getting a .30 cal JSAR Raptor for next year.

I wanted to build a do it all hunting rifle for next year so I decided on a 7 WSM, and I think I bitten off more then I could chew. Its been several months trying to get everything together and finally yesterday I was able to take its first shots. For months I've been on the lookout for 7 WSM brass but have not found any. I decided to buy 300 WSM brass and neck it down to 7 WSM.

The chose 20 rounds to develop a load and break in the barrel. I only go to the second firing until I noticed a ring separation formed around the middle of the body. I knew the 300 WSM brass body length was shorter then the 7 WSM but I didn't realize the length was way too short. I have in the cart at Midway 270 WSM brass and will checkout tomorrow. I hope this will solve the ring separation on the body issue, and if this doesn't work, I'll have to scrap the 7 WSM idea and move on to a different caliber.

As I was trying to figure out what to do about my 7 WSM brass issues, I was looking over the SAAMI specs of the WSM cartridges and I come to the conclusion Winchester tried to kill the 7 WSM from the very beginning. Winchester developed the the famous 308 cartridge and from this cartridge, it has spawned the 243, 7-08, 260 Rem, 270-08, and more. The 308 and it's children are very popular cartridges, and the reason I think they are all very popular is because they can all use the 308 headspace which in turn they all share the same brass.

Its just frustrating the one cartridge I decided to use is the one cartridge that has everything working against it. I should done a better job researching this cartridge. I'll just have to see if the 270 WSM will solve my woes.

Either take up the above offer or there is plenty of brass for sale on gunbroker. Yes it it will be about $2.00 a case but you will have the proper brass. Once you get that you will find it is an excellent round.

You could just have the tenon cut off, rethread and chamber for a 7 RSAUM or a 7-6.5 PRC. Brass availability is much more reasonable with the latter.

Do not fire the 270 WSM brass in a 7WSM chamber. You are going to need 7WSM brass. I have 150 pcs of Winchester new in the bag I will sell. PM me if interested.
That is a very nice offer to a member that is in a bind, the reason this forum is so great. Members working together. Great job.

Get a mandrel and neck up to 30 cal. Then size the case neck to 7mm just enough to create a false shoulder. You need a little resistance in chambering the brass at this point. After fireforming you will have 7wsm brass.

This right there but if you don't already have the 270 WSM brass start with 300 WSM brass and you'll eliminate the necking up step.

I've run into another problem, and if I can't solve this one, I'm going to scrap this cartridge. I'm on my 2 reload on the brass and the base of the cartridge is not being resized. I have run into this problem before with two other cartridges and have solved it with a body die or finding a small base FL die. I looked around online and couldn't find anyone who sold a small base for 7 WSM. I'm thinking about buying another die set that has a body die and hope this will size the base.

A 26 or 28 Nosler die will size the .200" line of 300, 270, 7mm wsm case.

Redding makes a body die for the 7wsm. I have never had a sizing/loading issue for any SAAMI cartridge using a standard FL sizing/seating die set? What other issues are you having since you started using factory 7wsm brass?.

Ok. I think I know what needs to be done. I'm very sure I'm using the wrong mag shell holder. The mag shell holder I'm using came with one of my presses. On the RCBS die set box, it says I need a #43 shell holder and I don't have it. I'm going to hunt around town to see if I can find one locally.

I should have mentioned I use same brand shell holders as die, and I keep the SH with the sizing die. Mainly because I do have multiple cartridge that use the same size SH. And I want to keep them together when I have good consistency sizing results, saves time when switching cartridges. I think you are on the right track!!

I don’t see how a different shell holder can help with sizing the base of a case. It sounds more like a miss match of sizing die vs chamber reamer. Are you getting clickers with extraction?

A #38 and 43 shell holder are essentially the same, is it your getting clickers or not enough bump in the shoulder? Different shell holder can solve the bump issue but I dont see how it will solve a sizing at the base issue. If its a sizing at the base issue then you have a chamber- die match problem like stated above. I just had this problem on a 20 Prac and a New JGS reamer solved the problem, the PTG reamer I used was .002 small at the base.

I just smile when people refute my assertion that reloading is a combination of art and science, especially so when it comes to “advanced “ reloading such as this. IMHO posts such as this one prove the point.
