For some reason I try to be different. When I shoot in airgun competitions, I always went against the norm. I used crickets, edgun morana, and looking at getting a .30 cal JSAR Raptor for next year.
I wanted to build a do it all hunting rifle for next year so I decided on a 7 WSM, and I think I bitten off more then I could chew. Its been several months trying to get everything together and finally yesterday I was able to take its first shots. For months I've been on the lookout for 7 WSM brass but have not found any. I decided to buy 300 WSM brass and neck it down to 7 WSM.
The chose 20 rounds to develop a load and break in the barrel. I only go to the second firing until I noticed a ring separation formed around the middle of the body. I knew the 300 WSM brass body length was shorter then the 7 WSM but I didn't realize the length was way too short. I have in the cart at Midway 270 WSM brass and will checkout tomorrow. I hope this will solve the ring separation on the body issue, and if this doesn't work, I'll have to scrap the 7 WSM idea and move on to a different caliber.
As I was trying to figure out what to do about my 7 WSM brass issues, I was looking over the SAAMI specs of the WSM cartridges and I come to the conclusion Winchester tried to kill the 7 WSM from the very beginning. Winchester developed the the famous 308 cartridge and from this cartridge, it has spawned the 243, 7-08, 260 Rem, 270-08, and more. The 308 and it's children are very popular cartridges, and the reason I think they are all very popular is because they can all use the 308 headspace which in turn they all share the same brass.
Its just frustrating the one cartridge I decided to use is the one cartridge that has everything working against it. I should done a better job researching this cartridge. I'll just have to see if the 270 WSM will solve my woes.
