What's the next greatest rifle chambering?

Strictly from a sport shooting perspective, (non hunting scenario), I disagree that the 6.5 Creed mentioned in the OP is the “greatest”, or even the 308/7.62 family.

Judging from the number of Disciplines that it is being used in, (and wins in), and the number of different chambering that it is modified too, the 6BR Norma case in my opinion just might be ”the greatest”.

It is used in Short Range in its factory configuration, Short Range when shortened .125 inch, longer ranges when formed Into a 6BRA, 6X, and of course the 6mm Dasher. All of that and it absolutely rules the Short Range Best Edge Score Game when necked up to 30 caliber.

And to top it off, it has it’s own Forum right here on accurateshooter.com.

Great, actually superb 6.5 bullets existed long before the 6.5 CMB.

For this audience, factory ammo is not a criterion for validation. Factory 270 ammo is abundant but it is a very disappointing cartridge. Guess it was wiz bang 100 years ago. Sort of the 6.5 CMB of 1923.


I don't 'hate' the 6.5 CMB. 6.5 is a great caliber. I struggle with the fanboi exuberance where they extol the virtues of the item with a cult like rote recitation while having little actual knowledge. i.e. "Hemi". Pretty much every automotive engine has a hemispherical combustion chamber but Stillantis owns the name so only they can use it.

That is where I am at with these kinds of things.

Jackie I am talking numbers, 6.5 Creedmoor has past 308win and 30-06 in sales and is number three right behind 22LR and 223 rem. Most of the sales are to younger people that are not into rifles like we are, I but most of them don't even know what a 6BR is.

What about a 220 swift sized case with the hybrid steel base like a 277 fury, at 80,000PSI and bushing a 50 grain bullet 5000fps. It would probably need to be a solid copper as I doubt may cup and core bullets would survive the trip.

YES,. the Low recoiling, 130 grain, .270 Winchester WAS "the Creedmoor" of It's Day,.. in the 1960's !
At 15 y/o, I was shooting, a .30-06 with 180 grain Bullets, as It WAS,.. Manly ! ( LOL !,. Ouch ! )

Cartridge...I don't know. 25 Creed brass is available but not in factory rifles. The 277 Fury is available but in limited production (I like this in normal brass and I have a reamer ordered for it).
Caliber wise the 23, 296 seem to be the open slots.

I think you've got to first look at what will sell well:
1) Not too much recoil - so less than 150gr
2) High BC - for weight that would mean 6.5mm or smaller calibre
3) 0.473 case head
4) Enough mass to perform at 1k
5) Case volume sufficient to push close to 3,000fps
6) Sensible barrel life/not too costly to shoot

To me that all points towards the new Sierra 131gr .25cal with about 45-50gr powder in a case of about 60gr H2O capacity (7x57) the shortened .284 6MMsteve suggests might do it?

The 6.5 Creedmoor took America's attention by storm, but it's been a while since its introduction. Love it or hate it they make more match ammo great bullets and cases for a Creed than anything else. But I imagine some manufacturer is getting antsy to come out with something new. But I am uncertain as to whether the current scramble to make guns and components to keep up with demand will stifle a new introduction. But sooner or later some maker of rifles will want a bigger piece of the pie. What will be the new latest and greatest rifle cartridge to be introduced? Will it be another Hornaday offering or will someone else come up with it?

.308 Norma Magnum. If UR worried about recoil take up .22 rimfire shooting, or perhaps a pellet rifle if the rimfire is too much for you.

I have no idea what the next latest greatest bolt action chambering will be. But I have been thinking about an AR that has a light weight piston driven action, in carbon fiber upper and lower receivers with a mag well 1/4 to 3/8 s longer than current AR 15s. With a SS barrel of that new longer lasting alloy that Bartlein has been using. Chambered in a .447 AK style base cartridge using a bullet diameter in between 6mm and 6.5mm or maybe even a 25 caliber (its in between the two). Longer mag well to allow a long match bullet to not use up powder capacity. Slick sided action with NO forward assist, free float handguard and an extra thick upper to make it rigid.
