Powder burnt % question

Do you really think that bench rest shooters shooting consistant groups about 0.200" or smaller worry about the % powder burn. You develope loads to shoot small groups not to reduce unburned powder.

They may not worry about it, but if they did they would see that a lot of unburnt powder is very unlikely to produce .200 groups.

I'm sure they don't worry about it or in most cases need to. Shooting 28" and longer barrels tend to have near to or 100% burnout. It becomes more of an issue with shorter barreled rifles.

Your understanding is correct. The unburnt particles can impact the base/boat tail of the bullet which can imparts yawing motion on the bullet.

Most if not all of my rifles are using powders which burn 100% on the barrel according to GRT & QL. All shoot under .5 and 95% or better case fill and good speeds. Works well for me. I havent used a powder slower than 4831 in decades. No need to. Seldom do i ever go slower than 4350 speed powders

I can't say with authority that it would or would not. My gut (which is not a very good authority) tells me it's probably not a significant factor in ES/SD.

I work up loads for accuracy first and foremost, then FPS is second on my list. If I have a accurate and consistent load for any of my given firearms, handgun or long gun, I don't even think or worry about if any of the powder did not burn and maybe fell out the end of the barrel.
Don't over think your shooting sport and fun.

Pressure at the muzzle is likely to be a bigger factor than % burn; higher pressure is likely to upset the bullet more. A good powder for accuracy should burn quickly so it is entirely consumed early in the bullet's travel down the barrel; however, that will sacrifice velocity which in turn affects wind drift. Short range benchrest shooters tend not to be concerned about wind drift vs. long-range shooters who use high-BC boattail bullets instead of short flat-base bullets. You have to choose the trade-offs that work best for the particular discipline.
