Trying to save barrel, nothing wrong with it just switching calibersChuck up in a lathe and plunge a parting/grooving tool 10-20 thou from action face. Will screw off like butter then...
Was nervous that might hurt bluing?Try a heat gun.
Got it pretty warm with heat gun no goI don't recommend using a torch, although you could if used carefully. Heat gun is fine.
"The hot bluing process uses a caustic salt mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium hydroxide, which is heated to a temperature of 275 to 310 degrees F."
Kind of where I’m going I think unfortunately … was hoping to get going this weekend on it…. Haven’t had an issue with this till now…Get a better barrel vise?

Powdered sugar works amazingly well and is readily available. Remove the leather, make certain the blocks aren't bottomed out and that they match the barrel profile. Tighten the ever-loving crap out of it. Barrel won't move in the vice provided it's a decent barrel vice.Try some powdered sugar or rosin under the leather strap, should be enough hold with that.
That is basically what I did… except I used a few layers of tape…. I basically got the wrench just so it wasn’t wanting to rock on flat spots as I was concerned about crushSpike
Is that on your little Sako action?
If so, your action wrench might be to tight. Your compressing the action and clamping the action around the barrel threads. The actions are tiny.
The L461 has a flat bottom and a flat top.
Get a action wrench with 2 flat jaws. Slide you bolt into the action, put a piece of cardboard stock on the top of the action, to protect the metal checkering.
Tighten both sides of the action wrench finger tight EVENLY to just snug.
Than tighten with a wrench just a little, like a 1/16 of a turn.
Remove the bolt, than clamp the the barrel.
Give the handle of the action wrench a good hard wack with a 6-8 lb hammer.
Let us know if that works.

If you can post a couple of photos of the barrel in the vice, folks here will know what needs to change. At this point I walked away …. I made aluminum blocks for my vise, had leather in between some how clamping it got through leather and it left a mark on the barrel… over pissed… and beyond it still wouldn’t come loose… I thought I had it good and tight, tapped wrench with hammer … nothing… hit harder …. Hit a little harder….. I felt bad at the abuse I was giving…. And quit….. noticed marks in barrel upon unclamping … about to grab pipe wrench …. I’m feeling like a dumb ass here….
Don't let it get to you. It happens. Factory barrels are tight. You'll have to deal with it again at some point. Everyone goes through this rodeoAt this point I walked away ….
