Cleaning Question - Not what you think

I was cleaning one of my hunting guns today and going through my usual nylon brushing process. I noticed as I was removing the rod after finishing the brushing (30ish or so times down the barrel), my brush had gotten extremely loose on the rod and canted sideways. I’m assuming at some point it hit either the rifling or the lands while it was crooked.

Anything I should do to check or just shoot it and see what happens? Or did I trash the barrel by scratching the bore? Curious as it’s not something I’ve had happen before.

What kind of brush did you use? I'm a nobody in the gun game, but it's a gun, and you have a bullet getting mashed down the barrel at extreme velocities. Unless you hammered the crown, I imagine you probably did very little to it. You could get a cheap teslong borescope and have a look. I use one just to see how good of a job I do when cleaning.

I doubt you damaged anything(safety wise) and likely not accuracy either but I believe you will be more careful from now on checking the brush.

Those brushes are actually pretty nice. Im going to try some I think. Go shoot it and see. I'll bet money that it's absolutely fine, no recrown or barrel needed.

I seriously doubt you did any damage since assuming you were using a bore guide; the brush would self-align with the bore. I always check the brush tightness after each stroke - easy to do if you are wiping the rod after each stroke.

One of the reasons why I like Dewey no-harm bronze brushes is that the cores are brass so any misalignment will have negative impact on the bore given the bore see a copper bullet moving at 3,000+ f/s down it.

No sure what the cores of the Bore Tech brushes are constructed of, hopefully not steel but even so, the bore guide should keep things aligned. Do you really need 30 stokes? I found the about 15 with a bronze brush does a good job with 50 to 60 fired rounds through the barrel.

Some on here would say your ruined it by just using a brush, a barrel is not maked of glass it can take pretty much what a cleaning rod/ brush can dish out with in reason

That's the key phrase.... "with in reason"

Sounds like the shaft on the cleaning rod was not rotating freely in the handle.

I would say check this but your rod is now bent and once a rod takes a set I’ve never been successful bending them back into alignment. I’d trash the rod or find a use for it other than cleaning barrels. YMMV

The bore tech brushes are made of an aluminum allow twist with an aluminum bushing.

Unless you were using some sort of abrasive, it is damn-near impossible to damage a steel rifle bore with one of those.

Buy two Archery Nock pliers and use them to tighten the brush and you won't have that problem!

Brushes are pretty much self-centering; the bristles keep the core off the barrel steel (another reason to use a rog guide, which ensures that tips are aligned prior to entering the barrel proper.) In any case, most (granted, not all) brushes use a brass or aluminum core, which won't harm steel unless you repeat contact for a really long time. The worry I have is the rod end itself making contact, but that's less of an issue with a brush vs a jag, plus I use an aluminum-ferruled rod anyway.

You guys have to keep in mind....

There is no way every single bristle on the brush is going to follow/stay in the grooves of the rifling. I guarantee you that the bristles will ride up and over the lands as well.

A good quality cleaning rod with a free rotating handle is a must to have.

As far as cleaning rods go. Dewey Copper Eliminator, Bore Tech Bore Stix (the rod coating will flake off over time), Montana Extreme rods I like a lot, but are expensive, and what I use most are Pro Shot Polished Steel rods and older Ivy polished steel rods.

I do not care for Tipton. YMMV

Before I bought a chamber guide a few years ago... if I had to trash a barrel every time my dewey coated cleaning rod hit the rifling, I would have no rifles left. No they are not competition rifles, but they all shoot just fine for my purposes.
