I have a Winchester high wall with a 6mm barrel for a rimmed case . The rim is .05 thick for the chamber requiring a .049 Rim thickness on the actual cartridge. The diameter of the rim in the chamber will accept a necked down 7X57R case with a rim diameter of
.529 but action will not close because the rim on the necked down 7x57r cartridge is .062 thick. A 6 mm Remington cartridge fits in the chamber with a little excess headspace but of course won't work because it does not have a rim. Also the body diameter at the base of the 7X57R cartridge is .471 and the Chamber diameter at that point is .47 .
Any ideas?

Maybe 6mm Lee Navy? That’s the 220 Swift parent case.

Chamber cast is in order unless you’ve already done that. There were countless wildcats in the era that 1885 was barreled. Cartridges of the World has many listed. You might also refer to section in same book for European cartridges designed for single shots or combination guns.

The chamber cast measured really close to a 6 mm Remington but of course that is a rimless case and does me no good.

Thinking out loud....there is a European 7x57R, which may be a starting place, or even just a neck down. I think that RWS or Norma are likely manufacturers. A chamber drawing is probably out there somewhere.

I will probably end up modifying the chamber to fit the necked down 7X57R cases I received from Norma.
