I'd like to see a new F class Category. "F-TAC"

As a newer match director there has been many new competitors reach out to me that have rifles with muzzle breaks, foldable bipods and squeeze bags. Many of these are chambered in 6.5 creedmoor. I have noticed that many of these shooters become discouraged when I advise them that Muzzle breaks are not allowed in F Class. They also become intimidated when folks are shooting next to them off of large pedestal style rests and 3" forend stocks.

I will also point out which isnt new the influx of PRS rifles showing up on local firing lines. Is it time for F class to incorporate an "F Tac" or "precision rifle" category. The rules SHOULD be in my opinion any 30 cal rifle and lower shot off a foldable bipod, muzzle break and squeeze bag. No bunny ears. Curious what other match directors think of this?

everyone has a muzzle brake. id say open it up to both. Also depends on the state your in.

I don’t think the muzzle brake is that hard to remove. Having shot tactical style matches where everyone has a brake and fires at the same time it kind of sucks being prone next to them. The muzzle brakes are very effective for the shooter but really annoying to anyone next to you. Many times I’ve had the concussion from another rifle settle my bags and move my POA. 60+ rounds is also a lot different than the 5 or 10 per stage for tactical matches where you are the only one shooting. You could make it work but would have to have a decent distance between shooters.

At the range I shoot at, they have a piece of plywood up, everybody with muzzle breaks shoot on one side, everybody without them shoot on the other.

How much trouble would it be for a tactical shooter to screw on a .308 barrel? With that and a bipod, presuming the weight limit was met, he could shoot F TR.

Try it and see what happens. I bet a lot of those shooters with muzzle brakes will be asking to have people take them off after the first match. It's not particularly hard to remove one in the first place.
If they don't complain, and it increases attendance, great.

But when they pull it off, they need to retune their ammo, change their zero etc. If you're trying to shoot the same rifle in both disciplines, it kind of becomes a pain.

USHPA has this and shoots this at Camp Atterbury midrange and long range. Bridge between AR -Tactical and full blown F class.

Agree - I hate shooting prone next to a shooter with a brake on the muzzle, but I like to be behind a rifle with one in it.

Years ago I shot BR with a .284, under the rules I was allowed to shoot a brake that did not send the blast back toward the shooter, a radial style brake. It really helped to tame the recoil and the shooter’s on either side of me didn’t seem to mind or at least didn’t say anything. Never the less I would ask the match director to put me on one end of the line or if possible to have an empty bench next to me.
I say give the PRS guys their own relay, shoot a couple of matches and figure it out along the way. Maybe the plywood idea has some merit?? The main thing is you will have more shooters being introduced to a different discipline which is always a good thing. E
