The inconvenience of convenience

Just a 21st century rant. I use an Amazon Alexa to control lights, devices, run things like AC and fans on a routine that not only is convenient, but helps reduce my bills and is entirely convenient.

Being able to just talk to the internet for a question in a light hearted tiff with the missus has earned me a few points on my side of the score board (at least in my mind, lol) and you know when I just can't remember something I get to yell into the air for an inanimate object to remind me.

Until I came home today, the lounge room lights were on. I asked her to turn them off. Nothing. Cold shoulder. Um, ok? I ask again. Nothing. Now I'm thinking I did something wrong. I may have upset her. Was she mad at me?

No. She has decided to not to connect to the internet for some reason. Tried 6 times and now I'm left angered at an inanimate object perched on top of my desk.

Ugh, still can't get her to connect. I should just go load ammo and listen to Wheeler Walker Jr to vent my frustrations. Technology is great, until it isn't.

you know if that thing is listening for you to talk to it then it(they) can hear you all the time and they do listen all the time.

I'm 41, my life has been on the internet longer than my kids have been alive. The fact that most don't understand how much info is out there is more frightening to me than what I know is out there. I've used MFA for decades, voice to text, online resumes and yet still haven't had an issue except for internet forums and old accounts.

The internet is like poison oak, know what to look for, how to avoid problems, and mostly everything will be fine.

So can my kids and call me out on things they heard me say, with greater consequences, lol! The internet is not a cop interrogating me.

But, I can look up all kinds of info on those who think they're "not on the internet". Its there. Just be careful of what you post and where. No way out of it.

Embrace it, use it, confuse it too. An overabundance of information is less useful than a minimal amount.

Funny, yet I still read about forum users "getting scammed" all the time and accounts getting hacked. Including my own. Two years ago my account here was hacked and fraudulent for sale posts were listed in my name. I did catch on within 30 minutes and got it rectified with Forum Boss.

It was from a data breach of a forum I used to frequent 15+ years ago and was rectified with Forum Boss here. An account I didn't abandon, but actually deleted. It was still out there. So, if you think you're immune, better get some anti-virus software!

Stay clean on the internet my friends!

as long as your happy and know whats going on. youve been a good guy on here. i have worked on building the data centers and i know there is no privacy for anyone anymore. absoulutely none—- they just keep adding capacity to store more info. mabie youre kids have pics- lol

Any device that connects to the internet leaves an electronic trail, that’s the price of admission. I’m too far along my life line to care. If younger, I would likely have a different attitude but wouldn’t choose to live an “off grid” existence. Be careful when online, you never know who’s working/lurking behind the scene!

I had to look up Wheeler Walker Jr., never heard of him before.

Wife has an Alexa. We were talking one evening about buying a new pot or pan or something and the next day a whole raft of pots and pans shows up on my Amazon "More Items To Consider" page.... I unplug the thing every chance I get...

this is what i want to do and am doing. im even thinking of gettting rid of cell. may not be able to do that
The land line phones in my area are in such need of repair on the lines, most are switching to some kind of internet deal that plugs in at your house and it keeps your same telephone number.

It is a convenience and not a necessity, cell phones what is there to talk about today that is so important that could wait 30-40 years ago? Heck I knew 20+ phone numbers off the top of my head years ago, I barely know my own now.
Technology is really F’ing up the young people imho. Faces glued to phones and IPads like fricking zombies or a crack addict, gotta have that fix. Just the past weekend a guy was pushing a cart with two kids in it both were on their devices, mom was in the front on hers, dad pushing the cart on his. Mom walked right into the side window of the entrance door and dad ran the cart into her, the kids never even looked up. All I could do was shake my head and walk through the door.

Once data is out there, you can never be sure that you can erase it. Most data is not managed very well at all, and many human gatekeepers are not all that worried about your data.

Mine is old enough to have the same info at the bottom. In the 1970-73 time frame, the military had the bright idea to change from a military ID # to the SSN. They found out 20+ years later that that was a BAD idea.

A few years ago both my sister-in-law and I both had Alexa in our houses. We threw both of them out when the damn things started answering questions without being called upon. I will not have any of those things again.
