Not beating a dead bush. But with the 169gr and 177gr smk,174gr eld vt, 176gr A tip. Might be a few others as well. Can the 308 be used in PRS and have any gains using these new bullets over using the tried and true 168gr or 175gr ? 10 twist 90 freebore chamber.

Ballistically it might have some aspects that would hang with 6mms

Recoil mitigation is the key in improvised positional shooting. Even with a 25lb rifle and a brake it will still recoil more than desired.

It could be used but it wouldn’t be most people’s first choice.

The NRL Hunter matches that require power factor, the 308 with modern bullets would have some traction there.

I know a guy running a 7mm saw with190gr berger at 2550 fps with a TMB and loves it. So thinking about something similar in the 308 realm with a TMB.

Yes there are gains over the old 168 SMK, which is crap going transonic due to it's design, or the 175 SMK which has a low for weight BC. The TAC division, where most shoot the .308, limits you to a max weight of 178grns and max velocity of 2800fps so you do have the options you mentioned as well as the 168 and 178 ELD-Ms and 178 BTHP. All with BCs over .520. I have used the 168 ELD-Ms pushed by Varget at 2760fps and have shot targets to 1250 yards in matches. I have some 176 ATips I plan to load up this year to try out.

Seems to me...If.Palma shooters are limited to .223's and .308's(with 155gn bullets) and are effective to 1K yds,.....308's should be entirely effective for PRS. Palma shooters are not allowed any kind of rest or scopes and usually weigh less than PRS equipment. Also,Palma shooters accuracy requirements are alot more demanding than PRS...In PRS,you just have to hit the target SOMEWHERE---ANYWHERE...not so in Palma.
Good luck and stay safe.

Totally different game. Palma shooters don't have to spot their shots and only have 90 seconds to shoot 10-12 shots.

Follow, the WINNERS,.. the FAST 6 MM's ( a couple of. 25 Creed's ) and, a Few,.. 6.5 Creed's,.. WIN
Sorry to be, BLUNT but,.. LOW controlable Recoil, Great B C's and, Speed,.. Wins !

Tac is a division in PRS.

And I have shot many matches in TX with a .308, 6mm and 6.5.

To Find out WHAT the PRS shooters really Use, go to the Precision Rifle Blog on YouTube and,.. DO,.. a search

He needs to look in TAC division to see what is used with the .308s as TAC is only .223 up to 77grn and 3000fps max and .308 up to 178grn and 2800fps max. He is asking if those bullets will be better than the 168 SMK and 175 SMK and the answer is a firm yes as they all are much better.

Open is where the slower powder puff 6mms are used as well as the 6.5s. If he is just getting into the sport and he wants to shoot his .308 then he will be just shooting TAC as he is not looking for a podium seat anyways. Just wanting to shoot his .308. Not get in a gear race.

If you are going to run a 308 I would recommend the modern 155s. I shoot a lot of lapua 155 scenars and they easily make it to 1k and have less recoil than the heavier bullets. You can spot your shots with good form.

You can spot shots easily with 168 and 178 bullets also and you get a higher BC to help with the wind. With the 2800fps velocity cap the 155 makes no sense at all.
