.22 ARC

Life is too short to shoot competition with a suspect barrel. My 223 service rifle barrels get pulled between 3-3500 rounds or the first sign of getting loose at 600 yards. Barrels are cheap compared to the expense of a 4 day match 1000 miles away. My pull offs are only half done and will still shoot fine at 1-200 yards for practice or pd hunting.

You are right....and waiting 12 months for a barrel , makes it shorter! And that's for a blank! Luckily, I have an awesome Smith that will chamber, etc in 2 weeks to a month. The new normal is having to constantly search for componets, grit your teeth, close your eyes and hit " buy now"....different times. rsbhunter

True, if 223 would consistently take the steel plates off the stands at 500 meters, I would be using it exclusively! The extra bullet weight and velocity I can get from the 22 arc ( in ar15) , gives me a small edge of power over the 223. I have seen the 223 turn targets and not take them off. But your advice is point on! rsbhunter

If your smart. you take a cheap two way radio and attach it to the back of the Gong set the mode on VOX. When the bullet hits the gong ( those that are way out there) it keys the mike and rings like your standing right next to the dang thing. Or the Flashing light stuff that is out there.
I think i will shoot at steel with what ever i want to thank you very much.
thats a good idea.

Works like a charm. I have shot steel for a very long time, Its the simplest least cost effective way to do it. 4 pack of radios on Amazon are very cheap. The Magneto Speed Flashing lights work pretty good also but are rather expensive but they do work. For matches I would think it to be irresponsible for the match director to not have some sort of indicator on the targets that are beyond 800 yards to not have them now days.
I apologize to the O P for the thread drift. This thread is NOT about shooting steel. It's about the 22 ARC.

sounds good - i wont try it with my yeasu radios but sounds like a good use for the baeofangs. Thanks

Always nice to pick up some new info to make shooting easier!!

Looks like Hornady has give up on the 22 ARC already. No dies, no brass, no load data. Really does not give a level of performance replicated by many other existing ctgs.

Dies were no problem, pricing wasn't stupid high. Brass, well....... I'm glad Hornady sells 6.5 grendel brass. I run it into a 6mm neck die, then the 22 arc, annealing in between. Haven't had a problem so far...rsbhunter

quadracer, i appreciate those links...i hadn't seen that info, and it really helps with test loads...im running a 26" bbl on an ar platform. Figure the velocity should be up there...Thanks again for the info...rsbhunter

As a side note, some of the factory ammo has been available. At around $1.50 a round, I almost can't load em that cheap. rsbhunter

I'm thinking of a 22 ARC for a bolt gun, but I'm holding off for now to see how much support it gets regarding components. I already have a 6.5 Grendel that I load for, otherwise I'd probably lean more towards a 22BR. If someone like Peterson doesn't come out with brass for it, I'll have to decide if I want to form it from new 6.5 brass, switch to something more expensive (22 BR), or give up some velocity and go with something that's cheaper to feed (223AI). I'm not in a hurry now so I'm waiting to see what happens with it over the next 6 to 12 months.

One thing that I did think was odd about Hdys load data is that for 75gr loads, they were using (~2gr) more powder in the bolt guns but getting the same MV where as all the other bullet weights were able to be pushed nearly 200 fps faster in a bolt gun. That seems off to me.

If the 22 br(a or other variant) would fit an ar15 platform, I'd have one. The competition I shoot stipulates ar15 size platform. My bolt 22bra is awesome. Hoping the 22 arc in ar15 will perform "close" to factory specs on ammo as it will be a 26" bbl. rsbhunter

Making 22 ARC is pretty straight forward. I used the method described in this You Tube Video. I made it from Starline Brass. After forming I annealed the brass, ran it through the sizing die again and loaded it.

26.5 grains of Benchmark, 60 grain Vmax, 2.20 OAL, Fed 205 Primer.
